Edge 840 refuses to update past 26.18

I recently purchased the RearVue 820 and noticed that some of the promised features were missing on the 840. I looked it up and read that the Edge needed to be on the latest firmware so when I checked I realized that it was on 26.18 and hadn't updated in almost a year. The Garmin website clearly shows 29.22 as the latest firmware and there have obviously been several other releases since 26.18.

When I "check for updates" on the 840, it says that a "Transfer is already in progress" but nothing ever actually downloads. I tried removing and re-adding wifi and deleted all files on the device in case the memory was full but still nothing. When I sync with Garmin Connect and Garmin Express, both tell me that the 840 is "up to date" and neither initiate a download. Finally, I deleted it from all apps and did a hard reset to wipe the device clean and start over from scratch, re-adding it to Connect and Express.

Still nothing. Everything is exactly the same.

Is this thing bricked?

  • is it international version of Edge 840 or special APAC or Chinese version? in the past there were different subrevisions , i dont know what is the situation with x40 series right now but probably there are also (and these have different update schedule and firmware numbers )

  • Check in the Garmin folder on th eunit for any file called gupdate. If there is one there then delete it, and try the sync again. If that does not work I would suggest contacting Garmin support. They can give you the file to manually place on the unit to do the update.

  • I had the same issue with my 840.  I was able to resolve it by plugging it into my computer and running the Garmin Express utility.  First it loaded some new map updates, and then after I unplugged it, the 840 itself prompted me to install the 30.18 update and it installed without issue.
