View daily distance traveled without manual activity start

Is there a way to view the total distance traveled throughout the day without manually starting an activity?

If it's not a built-in feature, could an app achieve it?

As a last resort, perhaps automatic activity start when movement is first detected for the day.

  • I don't upload my Edge activities to GC (they are very rare anyway), so I would only upload Speed Sensor data to GC to view daily or total distance. I could do that, right?

  • It's not just pressing a button though. It's pressing a button and then to stop & save: pressing a button, waiting 4s, pressing a button, waiting 2s, pressing a button.

  • If you don't mind that there will be many and many activites in GC. It creates activity every single time you move and you stop your bike. Then yes, pair the sensor directly with GC and you will get the numbers you want in stats in GC. Not in Edge though if I'm not wrong.

  • Garmin hasn't seen fit provide an odometer type capability, like you have in a car, for instance.   Perhaps a practical workaround would be to get an inexpensive cyclometer and use that to keep track of total miles.  You can find wireless or wired cyclometers for ~$25 on Amazon and elsewhere.

  • I do like my Edge for navigation (among other things) and I'd rather not put yet another device on my handlebars, so I'm leaning towards installing a secondary speed sensor with built-in data storage.

  • A simple cyclometer used as an odometer wouldn't need to be mounted to the bars.  It could be mounted elsewhere or tucked  in a saddle bag, etc....

  • I can't believe we're up to three pages on this.  I as well think this has been overcomplicated.  Start an activity at the start of each day, use autopause and autostart, enable battery saver mode, and press stop and save at the end of each day.  You'll then have an activity for each day with your daily total.  You'll also get to go back into GC and see the stats for that whole day, the GPS map, etc.  My very best days are when I have to go to all the trouble to push "Start", "End" and "Save", because that means I got to ride!  I can't imagine being bummed about pushing those buttons!

There's nothing wrong with the goal of the OP, but perhaps an Edge isn't the right tool for his uses.  @Bichael I do hope you find a solution that works for you.

  • Still, it would mean travelling with an extra sensor and a cyclometer, apart from my Edge. And if I sync the Speed Sensor with GC, I would only need the one extra device. I travel with my phone anyway, but even without it I could upload the stored sensor data at any point.

Do you know of a cycling computer with GPS navigation and non-activity based odometer and daily distance?

  • Buddy we've provided you with some ideas for your dubious issue but you seem to have your perfect solution in mind regardless. And if interacting with your $500 device for 15 seconds is too much for you try these ideas to limit the nag screens: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pRzrL1Bgc90

God forbid you have to use the map or something. Good luck.
