View daily distance traveled without manual activity start

Is there a way to view the total distance traveled throughout the day without manually starting an activity?

If it's not a built-in feature, could an app achieve it?

As a last resort, perhaps automatic activity start when movement is first detected for the day.

  • You can turn GPS off and use it just with the speed sensor. Then the battery consumption will be much lower. If you also optimise display backlight settings, you can get some good battery life.

  • @Bichael Well, it's not going to work that way. I think the solution is the most obvious one: you have to push the button yourself. If you can power it on, you can press the start/stop button.

Also the speed sensor itself does not store or produce any info alone. It's very similar to a pedometer. Every time it ticks from one rotation, it tells the computer the wheel turned once. On every tick the computer adds the circumference of the wheel and divides it by time to calculate speed.

  • Sure, by GPS I mean GPS signal receiving, not Edge device itself.

  • Sorry I meant to reply to Bichael. I can confirm the speed sensor works on the Edge with or without GPS.

  • @Krectr
I understand that Edge is Activity based. But I see no reason why activities can't coexist with odometer/daily distance implementation.

Starting an activity requires an button press. Then stopping and saving it requires: button, 4s wait, button, 2s wait, button. It could be easily implemented as an automatic feature.
As for manually turning on the Edge, I remember to do it because the screen is blank if I don't.

Actually Garmin Speed Sensor 2 stores "up to 300 hr. of activity data".

  • I don't have the Speed Sensor 2 but the manual states that it can be paired with the Connect app, in which case it looks like you don't need the Edge at all. Without experience I can't say how it records data in the app or knows what distance was covered on each day since the previous sync but if you just synced it every evening, perhaps that would work?

If you try this, please let us know on this thread,. I'm very curious.

  • Wow, I had no idea that the sensor was capable of logging on its own. I paired it with GC and it's syncing dozens of various activities from last year. Some of them <0.05 km, probably just when I was moving the bike around lol. I kind of wish I didn't open this Pandora's box because it won't stop pinging me and I must clean up the activities. I'm not even sure what use case this capability is for?

@bichael I guess you could just use the sensor by itself and GC if that suits your needs. You'll miss out on lots of other pertinent information that the Edge generates.

  • My current speed sensor has no storage, but I'm considering using a second one (so two simultaneously), the Speed Sensor 2, which, synced with my phone, should give me the data I want.

  • The case capability is for people who don't have a head unit.  If you are using an Edge head unit, you do NOT want to pair the speed sensor with GC!  I made that mistake once, it's a nightmare!  Every movement of the bike creates a new ride.  It offers no advantage to pair it with GC if you have an Edge.  Only pair it with your Edge, and delete it from GC.

  • I think you're overcomplicating a situation that can be solved with just pressing the button. Perhaps connect with Strava if you'd like more goals and summaries. But, you do you.
