Garmin Edge 840 does not connect to Garmin Express

I just received the device today. It synced with the Garmin Connect on my iPhone automatically and asked for software upgrade. Then I wanted to connect it with Garmin Express on my mac, but it won't find the device. I use the latest Garmin Express 7.24.0.0 and Software version 24.55 on the Garmin 840. I have other Garmin Devices connected to this machine OK, i.e. - Edge 830, Forerunner 920XT, Varia Bike Radar, and Garmin nuvi. All devices work OK via USB. Any idea what can be wrong with the 840?

  • So, my Edge 840 Solar was updated to 25.25. I was able to update my device using the Wi-Fi connection to the Internet. Now, Garmin Express freezes every time I open my device for sync/updates and if I start the device in MTP mode (pressing the loop button and connecting the USB cable) it still can't find the device. This means Garmin Express is useless. Installed the OpenMTP as well and it doesn't find the device either after upgrading to 25.25. Not sure why and I've reset my Edge 840 Solar and not even after resetting it OpenMTP finds my device. Honestly, I'm ditching Garmin for good. Borrowed a Garmin Edge 840 Solar that is still running on 24.18 and both work, Garmin Express and OpenMTP. This means that 25.25 sucks! If Garmin developers can't make the usage of their devices a breeze, I'm not spending a penny on it... Hardware maybe good but software really sucks! Time to change brand. I just want to record my training and tracks when I ride... No wonder in the Marine space boats usually choose Huminbird, Ray Marine, SIMRAD, Lawrence over Garmin. Garmin is usually more expensive, requires additional accessories and is more complex to maintain and use... Imagine you must troubleshoot Garmin at sea...

  • Thanks a lot; it worked for me as well! But honestly, I don't understand why we need 7-8 pages thread instead of working intuivitely. We are talking about a company like Garmin; it should be able to deliver easy to use software

  • Actually when I installed OpenMTP (on my Intel Mac), it connected to my 840 device with no issues, I did not have to press the Lap button and screen on the device showed the regular information, not "MTP mode". However when I closed the OpenMTP application, Garmin Express found the device immediately. It looks like Garmin Express has issues with MTP device initialization.

  • My is Apple silicon. Garmin only works well on Windows based OS. installed Windows as a VM on MacOS and it works. Like I wrote before the Edge 840 Solar was working fine with Garmin Express on a MacOS (Apple silicon) but stopped working after this stupid update… if you use the sane device but with older software it will work. For example 24.18. If you upgrade to newer version (e.g. 25.25) then you start seeing issues… Garmin has a good hardware and a lousy software since the early days of gps…

  • Does anyone have some experience with the Wahoo Element Ace computer? Seems that this might be an interesting alternative to Garmin computer that let Mac users down. I'd love to sell my Edge 840 Solar for some Windows user and buy something that really works hassle free on MacOS (Apple Silicon)

  • Never mind. Just found what I was looking for and the answer is buying a Hammerhead Karoo. https://www.hammerhead.io/products/karoo. Will reset and erase all my data on Edge 840 Solar and sell it to someone else that runs Windows. Cheers.

  • Hammerhead Karoo is the answer to replace my Garmin.

  • I was able to finally make it work, I installed macdroid, you can use the free version, once installed connect the device, macdroid will detect the device, once is mounted close macdroid and open garmin express.

  • Right. OpenMTP did the trick for me. I think there is a problem with Garmin Express, which cannot initialize the device.

  • No wonder when they got hacked and customer's personal information with Garmin got leaked

Not entirely true, In July of 2020 they did fall victim to a ransomware attack, but there is no evidence that personal customer information was compromized. Only people assuming this happened and/or accepting heresay as fact.
