Garmin Edge 840 does not connect to Garmin Express

I just received the device today. It synced with the Garmin Connect on my iPhone automatically and asked for software upgrade. Then I wanted to connect it with Garmin Express on my mac, but it won't find the device. I use the latest Garmin Express 7.24.0.0 and Software version 24.55 on the Garmin 840. I have other Garmin Devices connected to this machine OK, i.e. - Edge 830, Forerunner 920XT, Varia Bike Radar, and Garmin nuvi. All devices work OK via USB. Any idea what can be wrong with the 840?

  • As strange as these 840 connect to MBP M1 instructions are, they worked for me but had to wait about a minute.  Thank you for the excellent tip.

  • Tried the steps posted by Pawel_R.

Initially it seemed to work perfectly but then the map update failed halfway thru.

  • I managed to do a similar system with Garmin Express on Windows.

    1. Disconnected from Garmin Connect on Phone (turn off WiFi and Bluetooth)

    2. Ensured Garmin was on  and not connected to phone

    3. Connected to PC with a USB cable (not the one included as it seems like it can only do power)

    4.  "Wait so it will start and will display cable connection screen with EJECT Button in RIGHT BOTTOM corner."

    5. Start Garmin Express

    Thanks for your help!

  • After 25 update express freeze while im connect Edge 840 to Mac, only helps sync with Windows version of Express first, and after reconnect to Mac OS

  • I just got off a chat session with Garmin support (1-7-25) trying to resolve the issue stated here.  My Mac desktop computer & Mac laptop were no longer "seeing" the Garmin folder on the desktop (or in Finder).  My main purpose for accessing the Garmin Edge 840 files was to upload routes that either I created or downloaded elsewhere.

The Garmin Support rep told me that the Garmin folder would no longer be visible on Mac desktops or in the Finder (I don't believe this is the case for Windows computers).  In order to upload courses to the Garmin, you have to access through Garmin Connect.   Once in Garmin Connect, open Training & Planning, and then Courses.  There's a button there for Import.

    I hope this helps.

  • Hello, you need to use Android file transfer app.

  • This has worked for me on Mac M2. Thanks.

  • Agree Gramin is letting down Mac users. Not the first time. No wonder when they got hacked and customer's personal information with Garmin got leaked. I moved to Polar watches since, but I tried to give Garmin a second try but seems they keep messing up things. Maybe they are doing this in fear of other devices competition?

  • MTP protocol, that G moves in 25.24 not support natively by Mac OS, thats why it not appear in Finder. A lot of 3rd party solution to work over MTP, and Im sure, that G use own for devices, looks like an issue with Express at all

  • OpenMTP works well for me on Mac:

    brew install openmtp
