Edge 840 red border with red arrival flag

Suddenly a red border can show up on my bike screens, accompanied by a red flag... Out of nowhere.  While this happens, navigation continues, but distance, time and all other values are no longer captured.  Reviewing the activity, a line is drawn from the popup timing to arrival that says 'hidden'.

What is this red border ?

How to avoid or deactivate?

Many thanks !

  • It seems that you going into auto pause mode. Is the border really red? Look at the timer settings in your profile.

  • Thanks for your reply !

Auto-pause turns the whole screen grey with a pause sign laid over.

Here, there is a red border along the whole screen with a red arrival flag on the right hand side. Remainder of the screen is normal.

I cannot find any explanation in the user manual...

  • The only way that I can make the "red border" screen appear (on my 1040) is by pressing the bottom-right START / STOP button while an activity is active (ie STARTED). It is possible to enable an auto-start but I don't know of any setting that does an auto-stop ? The 840 also has other buttons so maybe it is possible to arrive at the red-boarder screen via some combination of other buttons?

  • The only way would be an accidently push of the timer button unless you have configured the button control options of a Di2 or compatible SRAM system to be start/stop. (or Edge Remote)

  • Many thanks.

I recall that during my ride, the unit powered of all by itself... What shouldn't happen even not when I hit a bump fairly hard.  Took a while to reboot.

I may have hit the Start/Stop to get it going again... While it was already going.

I hit this button a lot when performing HIIT and am crossing streets : no such red border screens.  I presume this coached workout is not seen as an 'activity'.

Is all this in the manual somewhere?

    Thanks again.

  • If the unit crashed and restarted then yes it would have stopped the activity upon the restart and given the red boarder.

  • All sorted now.  I just need to press START again to get going.

Does your unit crash at all ?

    Tx.

  • Does your unit crash at all ?

Mine (1040 version 24.19) does not and never has crashed, frozen, re-booted, (bit over 2 years old), I install every beta so should be a sitting duck but I also use a minimum of the device features and certainly almost nothing that was new in 23.xx & 24.xx (some of which seems pretty buggy), minimising features (& almost no backlight except night) equals minimising processor load / memory usage and means I also get 90 hours plus from a charge, I do longer rides and reliability / predictability is more important to me, I am happy, just hope  I can kept it going for 10 years or so, if I can get a slightly larger location symbol on the map I will declare it perfect (for my type of riding).

  • Good to read.

You are managing your unit to a great extent. Impressive how you have prioritised matters.

I agree that the navigation map could be better.

I will update my unit today Smile
