24.18 and 24.19 Grade % wildly inaccurate

On both of our 840s and my 540, 24.18 and 24.19 grade information is inaccurate and very jumpy.  Today's ride was on a Rail-Trail, so I know the grades are long and very consistent.  The Edges will show a descent when we are clearly climbing and the values jump all over the place.  Worst example was a long 2% climb, which Edge beta prior to 24.18 correctly identified.  24.19 identified the grade as -4%, yes, a 4% descent.

  • Oh, I guess that might be the case, can't say categorically. I'll check next ride.

  • No, power on, calibrate power sensor and ride

  • Same issue here. Support chat sent me a new device but now I’m realizing it’s not just me.

  • Ok, turned off the 1040 last night on again this morning before the ride and today the gradient display was fine, accurate gradient and quick responses. Seems like on my unit anyway the sleep mode must affect it.

  • I have same trouble on my 840 - it starts around 3 weeks ago. Totally gradient seems ok but live climb is out. Real uphill 9-10% is displayed from -2% to 3% at this point on constant gradient hill.

  • Same. Grades are often quite a bit off on my 840 with the recent firmware. Usually runs lower than reality, like 0% on a 4% climb.

  • I had the same issue and they sent me a new device - that made me happy for about 2 weeks when I realized it too suffers from the same erratic grade and elevation issues. And yeah way off like climb pro recognizing the climb yet the gradient being zero or negative for the entire climb. Go figure.

  • Grade % is everywhere.  Just got my 840 and it updated to 24.19.  Took a regular route and the gradient was way too jumpy and inaccurate. Upgraded from an edge 130 and beginning to regret buying the 840.  I hope they release an update.

  • Yep.  I don't understand how Garmin can let this go so long without a fix.  Gradient is a big deal and one of the main reasons I use such a device when riding on the West Coast of California.  Not my idea of quality or customer service.   I have a knock off cheap GPS from China that works properly with grade etc ..  it was less than 100 dollars.  Come on Garmin.

  • I just bought an Edge 840 and thought the grade was wrong. I was hoping it was something that could be fixed by some parameter in the settings but now I see it is a firmware issue. That is disappointing, one expect a device like this to be able to measure the grade with acceptable accuracy.
