On the 800 that i've upgraded from you could set the zoom level for POI that you have uploaded, but on the 840 however much I change the zoom levels (and I believe 'map points' is the correct one). The zoom level at which my custom POI are visible is 300ft, no greater. I get that the map can get cluttered if I want the visible at 0.5mi (which I do), but I can live with that. However it seems a no brainer to have a separate category for custom poi, and then you can have all the, to be frank, pretty useless to me 'out the box' poi/map points only visible at a high zoom, and control your own poi independently.
