Edge 840 restarted mid-ride

This was a problem with my 830. It seems to be a problem with my new 840 as well. Towards then end of a 45mi ride 840 turned off and restarted. It continued after reconnecting to all devices but any distance traveled was lost. I can provide the crash logs if that helps.

  • Sit tight guys. Looks like the upcoming 24.x update will address crashing... or at least we can all hope.

I plan on doing a factory reset after they release the update. My 840 has become so incredibly unreliable that it's now a liability to use.

  • I choose to give a try to the beta 24.15.

After a ride of 2.25 hours, no crashes. I will try with bigger ride (more time) to see if the problem is definitely fixed.

  • same happened to me this Sunday. On todays 2.5h ride no issue.

But the fact that it happened once, means they seem to not catch whatever exception. Which is pretty bad software quality

  • It's happening to me as well when NOT using radar, I mean I left radar at home, but garmin keeps periodically trying to connect to it. After ~1-1.5 hour garmin edge device restarts.

  • My 840 spontaneously rebooted at 2h21m / 24.7 miles into a ride today. Running 24.18 firmware with a Varia 515 and Coros HRM connected via BLE. Really annoying. Since I have a custom boot message I had to do the hit-any-key-to-continue thing. The ride was still intact, so I only lost about 30 seconds of it. I'm wondering, though, if I had not noticed the reboot - and therefore not hit-any-key-to-continue - if the ride would have still continued immediately after the reboot.

Come on, Garmin. Many of your customers have owned several generations of your products. You can fix this.

  • Hi I have the same issue twice. But i think Garmin doesn’t care about lots of issues

  • I just got a reboot on 24.19

One of the biggest problem with this is that the radar is essentially giving a false negative, if there's a car coming there will be no indication because the head unit is restarting and I might not have noticed.

  • Stirring up this thread to say it’s September, I updated my Garmin and this happened to me yesterday. Shutdown/restarted lost. 0.2 miles
