Edge 840 freezes after ejection from Garmin Express

Hey!

After I do anything in Garmin Express with my 840 and once done right-click on it to eject it, the devices freezes in the screen you see below. Only thing that helps is to force a restart.... Latest Garmin Express and Firmware (19.22) on device installed.

I tried a complete reset as well already, but the behavior stays the same. Anyone has the same issue or has an idea what I could try?

Thanks a lot!

  • Hi Tomasz,
    I don't think it's a HW problem, of course.
In my opinion, all models of the x40 series have this bug.

  • Hi, I don't get it.. I also had this problem. Someone here said it maby had something to do with maps. And yes, I did reinstalled maps.(Europe all) No freezing here now, at least not on my 840 on PC
For me the problem is solved.

  • Hi,

Would you be so kind to share a screenshot or names of .img files from the Garmin folder here? I'd like to compare the names of these map files to the ones installed on mine.

  • Mine goes into that screen mode most of the time for me as well.  I plug it into my macbook.  When I am done, I eject it properly and then unplug it and it goes into this screen.  I have to hold the power button for 10 seconds and reset the 840.  It's kind of a pain.

  • Hi Tomas, maybe I managed to understand where the problem lies.
the device comes with the European map (full)
and North America. I had to remove North America because there wasn't enough space on the device when I did the update. and I think it depends on that.

  • Guys, I may have found a solution. I was having issues with the update to Garmin Connect v7.20.0.0 for Mac as per this forum thread https://forums.garmin.com/apps-software/mac-windows-software/f/garmin-express. In the thread there is a workaround whereby you uninstall Garmin Express completely following these instructions https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=6nBhfHhXik18XrRU6BfULA, restart your Mac and re-install Garmin Express. Once you launch Garmin Express you need to re-register the Edge 840, process took me 15 seconds. Since then I have connected and disconnected the 840 multiple times and it has not hung once.

  • Hi, I tried that too. At first it indeed seemed that the problem disappeared. Unfortunately, after several attempts, the problem returned. In fact, Buggy Garmin maps or something else?
According to my memory, the problem began after some firmware update. Certainly it was not there from the beginning of owning the device.
Currently I am testing maps from another source.

  • Ah ok, well so far it's working for me. The only maps I have installed currently is the European map.

  • Your post gave me an idea.
I installed Garmin Express on a new PC that I am testing (Windows 11 Pro) and then connected my Edge 840 to it.
I entered my account and made updates etc.
well, it didn't freeze when I ejected it. So I assume it's due to something between the old express installation on my pc (win 10) and the 840.

Edit: I tried again on the other PC and the freeze happens the same.

  • I wrote to Garmin.
    because that's not good.
yesterday the device restarted during a run at the 90th km.
and it has already done this to me several times in the past few weeks, as well as freezing with the Garmin Express.
