840 mount is not as snug as my old 530

I just picked up an 840 solar.  I have genuince Garmin out front mounts.

With my 530, it turned in with a bit of tension from friction and was in solid.  The new 840 turns in with almost no tension at all. It does lock into place, but I can slightly rock it.  Is this normal?  I've seen posts where people have the mounting tab actually come off.  I checked my screws and they seem fine.

  • Yes, indeed. A few weeks ago, when I started to read about this issue and discovered this thread too. And then I thought I wouldn't buy one because of this issue. But I gave it another shot and went to another shop and bought one that didn't rattle at all (in fact, I tried 2 there and they were both good). And I used my own mounts for testing/comparing. So I'm really wondering if they made a small change to the manufacturing tolerances

  • I've had this issue with some of our Garmin mounts that were fine with prior Garmin versions. Fixed on my wife's road bike by adding a couple of small squares of electrical tape into the center of the mount.

  • Mine is loose enough that it doesn't rattle, but if I push a button to change the Garmin screen it spins out of the mount.

  • Absolutely /100% agree with analysis about the edge 840!! I lost mine twice and thankfully found it both times.  I have it mounted on the stem of my MTB bars.  I need to figure out how to tape it in during my rides. Ive only had it a month - my first Garmin bike device - wont buy a garmin ever again!

  • Garmin, fix the damn problem!!!! This is a big problem. Stop making excuses!! Come up with solution!

  • Use the tether.  It's not a solution to the loose mount, but at least it will keep your Edge from leaving the bike.  it takes mere seconds to tether to the bars whilst mounting each time.

  • Thanks.  Looks like I need to get another one. I can’t find it. Thanks Pray

  • fwiw:  Many years ago I lost my Edge 705 a couple of times, found it, then lost it permanently.  It had no provision for a tether.  All my subsequent EDGE units did so I always used it.  My 840, for whatever reasons, fits all my mounts OK (Garmin K-Edge, and a few others) but I always use the tether.

  • Yes, yes. I thought for sure I lost mine yesterday for good. I was so bummed. As I was heading back on my MTB - I backed tracked a little the way I had come and as I come to the crest of a hill there’s a rock and boom - someone found it and put on top. I was moved that someone did that (what a great community we have in MTB) - they could have taken it. But they left it.  I will not take it until I get my tethered. 2 times lucky! Not pushing my luck.

  • For those having rattling issue, have you checked if the replaceable mounting tab is not loose? Like some of you, mine started rattling a few months ago - after using it for half a year - and when I looked at the mounting tab at the back of my 840, it was loose! I tightened the two screws and it's no longer rattling.
