840 mount is not as snug as my old 530

I just picked up an 840 solar.  I have genuince Garmin out front mounts.

With my 530, it turned in with a bit of tension from friction and was in solid.  The new 840 turns in with almost no tension at all. It does lock into place, but I can slightly rock it.  Is this normal?  I've seen posts where people have the mounting tab actually come off.  I checked my screws and they seem fine.

  • Same issue here with my garmin 840. My previous garmin 830 was way more fixed

  • Why aren't more people complaining about this? I have a 830 that I like and I was thinking of upgrading to a 840. But if this is a serious issue, I won't do that, as I don't want the Garmin rattling on my mountain bike

  • Mine is definitely not as snug, but it doesn't rattle either.  I would classify it as acceptable.  I use the tether all the time now.

  • Yeah.  I find it acceptable on my Garmin mount and K Edge mounts.  It's not that is isn't secure, just that it isn't snug.  In my case it doesn't rattle noticeably. I believe the cause of the rattle is that when they changed design to make the mounting tabs replaceable,  they also made them slightly less snug in the mount.   FWIW:  I've used the lanyard on mine Edge units since losing one about 9 years ago.

  • This issue occurs also with the 1040. I have had the 1030+ , the 1030, 830 and 530 …they were all tight and snug in the original Garmin out front mount and also tight and snug in my K-Edge mount. The 1040 is loose in both my K-Edge and the Garmin mount supplied with the 1040. I always use the lanyard but that doesn’t stop the 1040 from bobbling about in the mounts. I have to insert several pieces of tape into the mount to prevent this happening. The new mount is made from metal whereas the older units were all plastic. I’m guessing that has something to do with it.

  • That's crazy. With the 820 and 830 my only experience with a loose fit was on a cheap Chinese counterfeit SRAM knockoff mount (which I returned to the guy I bought it from online for a refund). They are rock solid in the out front and K-Edge mounts I have.

I was ready to invest in a 840, but this issue is a big no-no for me :(

  • FWIW:  If you arrange the lanyard, which is elastic, so that it provides a little tension on the Garmin, it can eliminate or reduce any rattling.

  • Thanks, but the problem is I move the Garmin between bikes, so I prefer not to use the lanyard (never had a 820 or 830 fall out of the mount)

  • The lanyard takes mere seconds to use.  You wrap the lanyard around the bars then pass the Edge through the opening creating a noose.  I use the lanyard every ride and remove the Edge after every ride, it's easy.  I wish my NiteRider lights had the same type of lanyard, it's brilliant.

  • I know, I use that method. But Looigi was suggesting something else: wrapping the lanyard multiple times to provide tension and thus prevent rattling. That's a bit too much of a hassle to do every other day
