Virtual Partner speed

I want to set the Virtual Partner speed to some high value so it goes away on the map when Navigating a Course.  I can do that in the Controls Widget after I load a Course, but it seems I need to do it every time I load a Course and can't set it permanently.  Also, if the course is active, it comes up as % Effort.  If I stop the Course, it comes up as mph.

Can anybody shed some light on this?

Users have long complained about the big Virtual Partner arrow being present on the map and wanting to get rid of it.  Previous workarounds were to simply set it to a high speed so it would go away.  That doesn't seem easily doable on the 840.

  • Virtual Partner is the worst. In what scenario does it makes sense to have a virtual icon larger than your real life position? And you're correct, why not make it a universal option to set the speed vs only when routes are present? For that matter, you could go into each route and manually adjust them there.

I'm not sure why Garmin is so tone deaf to how much we hate the Virtual Partner but it's so annoying that I would consider a competitor's product just to be rid of it.

  • I can change it for a course after loading it, but it doesn't stick.  The next time I load the course it's back to 100% and I have to change it again, one tap for each 1%.   If it stuck, then doing it for each course would be bad, but not horrible like it is now.

I don't know where it gets its speed.  Yesterday, it pulled ahead and then later I caught and passed it.  How does it decide what speed to go?

  • Covered here, same applies to x40 devices but the VP screen is hidden in the widget loop rather than profile data screen, still a pain though

  • OK.  That seems to explain where it gets it speed, which basically tries to ensure it'll appear on the map, which is, of course, what many are trying to prevent by changing its speed.  There appears no way to change or affect it without changing it each time a course is loaded.
