Can Virtual Partner stats be reset?

Because of a medical condition, I must significantly reduce level of effort.

In order to keep pace with the vp, I have to set to 75-85% to keep pace on my Edge 1030 Plus.  Before start of route vp speed is set to 10.3mph.

I assume the 1030 uses my past performance to establish vp level.  Is there any way to tell the 1030 to forget the past and start fresh?

  • Just look at what your average speed is for a few past rides and set the VP to that and as you ride, just regulate the VP speed, by slowing it down or speeding it up one or two percent depending on if it is to slow or too fast till you get it right and just keep doing it as you ride, it should only be just a tap on the screen. But remember, the VP will keep a constant speed from start to finish and not reflect slowing down for hill climbs or speeding up for fast descents etc.

But, this is the way I mainly use VP,  if you ride the same routes often, just create a new course based on the ride history of the most current ride on that route since your medical problem. That is the best way by far, as then you will find that the VP will be based on that previous ride and will slow down up hills, fast down hills at the same speeds that yourself rode etc and is the best way of setting the VP for a course. That way, it can become quiet exciting as your neck and neck with the VP all the ride sometimes, you may be beat by the VP by a few seconds, or you may beat it yourself, and if so, just make a new course from that history file to reflect your improved fitness.

I don't think VP is based on past performance over a range of rides etc so you cannot alter it, if it was, just clear your history.

  • In my experience the VP speed depends on the type of ride, if you are doing a free ride (not following a course or previous ride) then the VP does a constant speed as set in the VP screen (which you have to make visible in the Profile data screen section).

If you are following a previous ride then the VP speed follows the speeds from that previous ride, you can adjust this via applying a percentage in the VP screen.

If you are following a course then the VP takes its speed from the time-stamps of the track points in that course. The time-stamps are set different ways depending on the planning software used. Garmin Connect route planner lets you set an average speed for the course created, his is a constant average, up and down hill. RWGPS users some average what neither they or I can understand, not much use but often very low. Other planners have more complex settings adjusted for grade, slower up, faster down. With the course you can still use the VP screen to adjust the percentage used to modify the time-stamp determined speeds

ps. For completeness I should have mentioned that while .FIT & .TCX format courses have time-stamps and thus implied speeds the .GPX do not. In that case the Garmin seems to pick up some average speed based on past activities to use as the VP speed but I have never found this on the devices or elsewhere.
