Trailforks on Edge 840

I've been using an Edge 830 for the last 4 years and specifically upgraded from the Edge 820 for the Trailforks integration.

I jumped to an 840 Solar because I'm one of 'those people' who likes new gadgets - and it was delivered on Monday.

My first time out was on Thursday - where I visited a brand new trail centre.  The new trails are on the Trailforks website, and on the phone app - but when I was there, none of the trails appeared on my 840.  I ended up with my phone in my hand every 10 mins trying to find the trails I wanted!

Reading the Trailforks website it states:

The Garmin Edge 530, Edge 830 and Edge 1030 Plus offer the integrated Trailforks features.

  • These Edge devices include a custom Garmin basemap with routable worldwide MTB trail data. Trailforks POIs are also included.
  • Trail search from the Garmin menu, to find a trail on device.
  • Forksight mode - automatically displays upcoming forks in the trail and gives you context by showing where you are within a trail network.

No mention of the 840 (although it is still quite new).  I can see my 840 has a Trailforks map in it, but it's about 6 months old.  Even when I update - I don't get anything newer.

I'm now wondering if I've made a big mistake with the 840?

  • Assuming USA, right?  I'm on the early part of the learning curve with this Trailforks "integration."  Got mine a week ago and it immediately got a Trailforks map update, which shows as ver 2022.20.  I've done 3 mtb rides so far and all the trails were on the map, but these trails have been around for a while and show up on my older non-Trailforks units as well.  I tried navigating a course on mtb trails, and like previous units, it was pretty useless, as well as having way way too many pop-ups and warnings.  I disabled everything I could find.  With earlier devices, I'd download a mtb course and just have it displayed on the map rather than try to use navigation, and I may go to doing that with this. I guess I'll need to play with it some more to figure out how best to use it.  Garmin needs way way better doc on how to use these things.  Personally, I'd rather ride the bike than f around figuring out how to use a bike computer.

  • UK for me...

I wasn't wanting to navigate the trails using Trailforks... I was just wanting to see them on the map so I could find the ones I wanted.

I've used Trailforks on the computer to set up a 'course' of somewhere I've never been before - then synced it with my 830.  It actually worked pretty well with turn by turn navigation... but I agree that I want to just ride rather than messing about with the Garmin!

I can download the latest Trailforks map from here: https://www.trailforks.com/tools/garminmaps/

It says 2023_03, which I'm assuming is last months - but I have to manually put that on the 840.  I'll have to try that tonight, and then see if I can scroll to where I was on Thursday to see if the trails appear.

  • Double check your MTB or another activity profile for the Trailforks specific map.

Should be under “Navigation”. If the trails are new and you have the Trailforks map enabled it may not be in that update. They typically push updates quarterly or so.

I am a Trailforks admin for my local trail network.

  • I initially loved that they had TF integration on my 530. However, in the last 3 years of riding with it, the entire map and base layers are simply too busy. My gripe with TF is that they show segments / sections of trails in a disjointed way. I've always been hoping that Garmin (or TF) would come up with a cleaner way to highlight preferred or popular loops (like MTB Project does) but nothing has changed.

The 840 is a great device but it's just as busy and confusing as ever when trying to navigate trails on the fly. The touchscreen vs buttons was a small improvement but didnt solve it completely. I do much better with the phone.

  • I just downloaded the Michigan Trailforks map from the trailforks website and added it to my 840.  You can get some very specific and fresh maps this way.

Go into the MTB activity and keep on going through to navigation and map information.  Disable the maps you don't want displayed.

Not the best video, but informative enough to get the job done: www.trailforks.com/.../

  • With the 840 you also have the option for details level. Maybe thats the ticket, turning layers off until you can just have a simple trail map. I'd be curious what you hid.
