Wifi not working

I realized that the WiFi connection does not properly work.
Komoot connection and download of courses works only when my iPhone phone connected via Bluetooth is near.
With the 830 Wi-Fi worked seamless. Just double checked both devices beside each other at the same place in the same network.

during setup procedure the Wi-Fi connection seems properly set up with no error message. I can see this also in the protocol of the router. But during later use I found out that neither Komoot, AccuWeather or any other online functionality of the edge 840 is working without the iPhone being connected via Bluetooth. Also the Wi-Fi icon in the top row of the screen never appears in bright white color  just in grey the first 20 seconds after switching the Garmin on

I‘m really disappointed that on a 600€ device the simple Wi-Fi connection doesn’t work as it used to do a n the predecessor.
I hope somebody from GARMIN reads this forum and takes care to fix this essential topic ASAP.

  • Any advice for the Wifi issue for JaniV, 4340689 and me? Should we wait for the next beta (or alpha)? Will there be a solution that works in the near future? Do you send a 1040 as a consolation?

  •  we have a ticket regarding the Wi-Fi sync failed error on firmware 9.29. I've reached out to you via email to request more information.

  • Hello, I'm having it seems like similar issues to many on this chain i.e.  Wireless Sync Fails every time.  I've reconnected to the wireless several times, it shows Ok, but I've never gotten it sync at all.  Help?

  • Welcome to the no wifi sync group.

You have to take that with humor. Sometimes there is a solution in the beta version, which then doesn't work again in the release version. But Garmin tries to make the best out of it. And not only the Edge 840 does not work with Wifi Sync, but apparently also some other devices: there is also a thread for the predecessor 830 and also the 1040. So it seems to be a general problem with the Wifi stack. Hopefully the next update will fix the wifi issue without breaking sensor detection or causing other problems. I made my analysis data available 6 days ago, but haven't heard anything yet.

I would also like to save Garmin's honor a bit: the 840 is indeed a good device and fun to train with. Wi-Fi syncing wouldn't be bad, but you can also use the Connect app on your smartphone to get the job done.

My offer to Garmin: Send me a 1040 and I'll test it a bit. Maybe the firmware 17.29 works in my WLAN. One more tester is one more tester.

  • Yap. For me is almost a non issue because I'm used to pair by BT the phone with the Edge when riding.

Loving the unit and no notable bugs...for now GrinGrin

  • Hi Amy

on 9.29.  When I first set up the 840 the Wi-Fi seemed to work.  On the new update it continuously says sync failed.  You can email me. Please access my GC account and UK

  • thank you for sharing. I may reach out to you directly to collect more info.

  • Just checked my home wi-fi network against the requirements link you posted above. My home network is 5GHz band as opposed to the supported 2.4GHz and is operating on channel 153 as opposed to channels 1-11. Seems like no Edge 840 wi-fi for me.

  • I've an Garmin Edge 840 and a FritzBox (2.4/5.0 GHz, WPA2/WPA3). The 2.4 GHz WiFi uses one of the channels 1 to 11.

    • Firmware 9.29: Cannot find the SSID (only ASCII letters). It is possible to manually enter the SSID and connect, but synchronization fails. WiFi-Status icon disappears after boot.
    • Firmware 18.23: Finds the SSID and connection was possible, but synchronization fails. WiFi-Status icon disappears after boot.
    • Firmware 18.25: Finds the SSID and connection was possible, but synchronization fails. WiFi-Status icon disappears after boot.

The issues remain when separate SSIDs for 2.4 GHz and 5.0 GHz are used. Downgrading to "WiFi 4" doesn't help. I can see in the logs of the FritzBox that the Edge connects shortly to the WiFi and exchanges some bytes. I previously used an Edge 530, which had no issue with the same WiFi!

    • Does Garmin know what the actual malfunction is?
    • Is a fix feasible at this time?
    • Can I help with further info (e.g. logs, beta test, some kind of backtrace)?
    • If not, can the device be returned and get an Edge 530 in exchange?

    Thank you

  • Are you sure it actually “fails”, mine has said Sync Failed since a couple of versions ago BUT actually worked every time, sends activities up to GC, gets new FW versions and other files down, all good. Oddly it was actually “fixed” in several of the recent 18.x betas and said Sync Complete rather than failed but as soon as I installed the 18.23 production version it was back to “Sync Failed” ???!!!
