Wifi not working

I realized that the WiFi connection does not properly work.
Komoot connection and download of courses works only when my iPhone phone connected via Bluetooth is near.
With the 830 Wi-Fi worked seamless. Just double checked both devices beside each other at the same place in the same network.

during setup procedure the Wi-Fi connection seems properly set up with no error message. I can see this also in the protocol of the router. But during later use I found out that neither Komoot, AccuWeather or any other online functionality of the edge 840 is working without the iPhone being connected via Bluetooth. Also the Wi-Fi icon in the top row of the screen never appears in bright white color  just in grey the first 20 seconds after switching the Garmin on

I‘m really disappointed that on a 600€ device the simple Wi-Fi connection doesn’t work as it used to do a n the predecessor.
I hope somebody from GARMIN reads this forum and takes care to fix this essential topic ASAP.

  • The Wi-Fi on my 840 exhibits almost identical symptoms (after all the troubleshooting steps), and it encounters the 0600 error code when checking for updates.

  • Has the device been updated to software build 9.09?

  • Not sure if this thread may help

Wi-Fi would not connect unless I tuned off WPA2/3

  • Mine yes. Updated 9.09. Still no Wi-Fi connection when mobile Bluetooth is turned off

  • Thank you for your participation in this forum thread. I would like to reach out so that we can further investigate.
    Please respond with the following:

    1. Do we have permission to email you?
    2. If needed, do we have permission to access your Connect account?
    3. Which country are you located in?
    4. What is the firmware version of your Edge 840?
  • Yes

    Yes

    Germany

    9.09

  • Managed to get 'Check For Updates' work on Wi-Fi after long time troubleshooting... It turns out that the culprit is the SSID being hidden, you have to broadcast it even if your phone (and thus GCM) has no problem connecting to a hidden one.

Also, if the network password is too long, it must be added and synced from GCM instead of being added directly on the head unit itself which has a limit on password length.

Still no luck with 'Wi-Fi Sync' though. But at least the hardware seems just fine.

  • Just got my 840 Solar. Coming from an 830. Setup seemed fine and first ride was road bike ride and it auto uploaded via Garmin connect iPhone app. Oddly did an eBike ride and it never uploaded so found this forum and dug deeper. Looks like when I manually try and wifi sync mine fails to. Somewhere I read that beta software fixed it so I opted in for the update but a day later nothing has pushed to my device for a firmware upgrade and I even plugged usb c into computer via garmin express. (That was the only way the EMTB ride uploaded) I thought this would have been dialed in after all these years I’m kinda shocked the 830 worked so well and there’s glitches with this.

  • Good points about the Hidden network and Wi-fi password length (8 character minimum). Full list of Wi-Fi requirements are found here for reference.

  • Sorry to hear about your experience with the Wi-fi on the 840 coming from an 830. I've got a report started. If you would like to be added to it, please reply to the questions above.
