Rerouting issue when following a route

Yesterday I was following a route. I accidentally went past the turning (point A). The computer recalculated a new route which I followed and eventually it joined onto the original route (point B). So far so good. It then directed backwards along the route to point A instead of going forwards along route from point B. Having rejoined the route I of course wanted to continue along it not backtrack.
Another weird thing is I was only about 100 yards from point A when it recalculated route. The new route to Point B was probably a mile longer!

On other occasions it tells me to turn around (ie return to point A) even though the quickest way to rejoin the route is to continue to point B.

is there any logic here? Are there rerouting settings I can adjust? Or am I better off turning off rerouting?

Rerouting does not work at all. There is no way to change the behaviour by settings. That's one of the reasons why I consider to change from Garmin to Wahoo.

  • Turn off Recalculation under activity profiles / Navigation / Routing / Recalculation.  It will just warn you Off Course.  Look at the map and get back on course - after a few it will find route and start navigation again.

  • If you let the unit recalculate it will just create a new route to your destination point.  It will not direct you back onto your original route and then continue navigating you along your original route.  Only the 1030+ can do that.

The best advice for all Garmin units except the 1030+ is to turn off recalculation and if you go off route manually get yourself back onto the route where the intuit will notice and start navigating you again.

I don't want to use workarounds. That's not what I expect from a navigation device that costs more than 300,- €.

  • It may not be what you expect but the reality is that the 1030 plus is the only Garmin unit that has sensible rerouting options.

  • I've never had a problem getting back on a route after going off of it. I just look at the map and head for the route. Why the need for navigation back to the route? Perhaps if you were way off the route by ten miles, then navigation back to the route would be a good feature.

  • Generally I'm in other screens when using the device - map only appears for where need to turn off etc. It is true if I'm on the map screen it should be better but even here it was not clear what the original route was and what was where it had rerouted me (showing direction to follow). In the recent example it was not obvious which was the onward direction when I rejoined the route. I've turned off re-routing as advised - until the algorithm is improved it seems the best option. Thank you all for your input.

  • This issue is a major pain. I'm seriously considering going to a Karoo 2 unit because this 830 has been giving me a lot of stupid problems recently. Prompting to update GPS firmware in the middle of a ride and losing that part of the ride.

    Supper annoying.

  • You might find that the Karoo has problems too.

  • Yes everything has its own problems but at least I won't be using what is the equivalent of 1980's technology in 2021.
