Edge 830, software 8.10 - suddenly routes don't work (route calculation error)

After downloading software version 8.10, I am suddenly getting an annoying prompt all the time during my rides using a Garmin course file (created with Garmin Connect): 'Route Calculation Error' that I have to dismiss all the time!  This is super annoying and essentially requires me to terminate the course file instead of riding with the course.  How do I revert back to the latest version of the software (version 7.xx)?  Or is there a way to fix this bug?  Will using the beta version (8.13) resolve this issue?

First time I've been this annoyed with the Edge 830...

  • I am having the same issue.  Route loads to 99% the I get route calculation error.  In the end I just had to turn it off.  I have only had my 830 for about 3 weeks and I am not impressed.  When I needed to take a detour to avoid a recently chipped road the 830 just wanted me to do a u turn.  I ignored it but when I re joined the original route the 830 still wouldn't play and kept saying that I wasn't on a road!

  • Same here. Pretty sure it is part of the same problem regarding finding back to the starting point via the most direct route. But don't think it is 8.10. I already had these issues from 8.00

  • Same for me as well. I can't get any of my courses to load since I updated to 8.10 and latest map version 2021.10. I tried reinstalling the maps but that didn't help. Still sea

  • I updated to version 8.13 and still getting Route Calculation Error - Maps do not have routable roads in this area

  • Did the Garmin Chat support and got it working. Had to remove a number of folders from the Garmin device due to a data corruption they said. Contact Garmin Support and they will give you the instructions

  • Made a factory reset. (well not exactly a factory reset, since the firmware and map was still the newest)

Had the usual problems with setting it up the android app etc... At this moment it looks like the unit can calculate routes again. I will have to test if the direct navigation back to the starting point is now working. I hope it was part of the problem...

  • That's great news and great to hear!  Can you tell me where to find the Garmin chat support so I can do likewise and fix my unit also?  Or, if you have the steps still written down, can you post here what you had to delete to fix this issue?  Thanks!

  • Had exactly the same issue, decided to reinstall the maps using Garmin Express (windows version - head unit connected to PC) this eventually worked (I think the upgrade to 8.10 somehow messed up some maps which stopped appearing under the activity maps)

  • So I found the answer and wanted to report back here for anyone else who finds this same issue.  Pdegrgryse hit the nail on the head below.  I followed the recommendation to contact 'chat support' which advised me to delete my folders for several items (Activities, workouts, courses, New Files, and RemoteSW) to which I replied-'I don't think so-I'm not losing all my courses, activity data, and workouts'.  The conversation then turned to 'what version of software and what version of Garmin Express are installed (I have version 8.10 on my Edge 830, but my software for Express was out of date (I had version 7.6.0.0 while the latest is 7.7.1.0).  I updated the version of Garmin Express, then connected my Edge 830 to my computer.  I then synced the device, and proceeded to manually for a 'Update Maps' using the new Express app.  It re-downloaded the same version of the maps, and installed them (it took a bit of time to do).  Once complete, I went out and rode a course I created yesterday and it now worked flawlessly!  Problem solved!

Hope that info helps someone.  Certainly try this before going with the suggestion to start deleting your data from the device.  If you do have to delete it, I would highly recommend copying it over to your computer (laptop, desktop, etc) prior to deleting from the Edge 830.
