2021: buying the Edge 830 or waiting for 830Plus/840?

I've decided not to buy a 1030plus because of it's price, but I've seen some articles on the internet stating that there will be replacement for the Edge 830

Is there anything official known yet? Because I am wondering if it  is better to wait until the newer model comes

  • I just remove Garmin maps then.

  • Completely agree with this post. 830 is by far de best cycling computer i ever owned.

  • Except for the well known bad rerouting behavior, I'm actually very satisfied with my edge 830.

What I would like for a successor:

    1. -more memory
    2. -multi gps band (L1+L5 etc.)
    3. -maybe solar functionality
    4. -music from edge (like on Epix/Fenix 7 series) via bt headset (and getting varia radar rtl sound via bt!)
    5. -rerouting like as on Edge 1030+

  • I think solar is a distraction.

It takes about 3 years of continuous use to recoup the energy used to make the solar panels. That's not just 3 years of owning an 840, or whatever it's called. That's 3 years of the 840 being connected to the national electricity grid, and providing power during every hour of daylight.

If not doing that, more energy was used to make it than it returns. And that's before we talk about the materials used.

Don't get me wrong - solar panels are a great way to replace conventional power sources. But not on a bike computer that is used 10 hours per week if it's lucky.

Solar panels would take up area, so either make the device larger (and heavier), or the screen smaller.

How much battery life do you actually want? In 2021 I rode 7,300km in 350 hours. No single ride was more than 7 hours. The current generation already lasts much more than that. If I'm away for a 2 day ride, I take a phone charger.

  • My wish list (many are software as well as hardware)

    USB-C

Always want to see a faster CPU and more storage. More modern CPU/soc to be more efficient.

Solar would be nice, given the Edge is in the sun all ride (when its sunny).

Bigger screen, more to the edges of the device, and better quality.

Better speaker and a range of sounds other than just variations on "beep"

    Rerouting that works.

    USB-C

Ability to use the accelerometer to record road surface quality as part of popularity routing (amount of vibration/bumps)

Ability to control a rear camera by Varia radar (recent Garmin patent) could be done by radar directly of course, or integrated in next Varia model.

Improve climbpro with names of climbs (like golf and ski resorts have) and don't need a route to be running to recognise climbs (like Karoo do).

Display battery life in hours like watches do

Add CoffeeandCakePro that warns of upcoming cake stops on the route. (aka UpAhead from the Fenix 7)

    USB-C

  • All of that sounds great, except the solar panels.

Uses up area that would be better used for the display, or makes the device bigger. Certainly makes it heavier and more expensive, while using more energy and materials to produce it.

To recoup that energy, the panel would need to be charging things or contributing to the national power grid all day every day for about 3 years. Not just being present on a Garmin for 3 years.

My rides are rarely longer than 7 hours, which the current device manages easily. If I'm on a two-day trip, I take a phone charger.

Don't get me wrong - solar is great - just not on these types of devices.

  • garmin use solar that sits around the display as well as a transparent one over the viewable screen so it wouldn’t losE much space. It’s all about battery life not recouping power to the grid . For all day rides or multi day adventures a longer battery life is useful for some people.

  • The math doesn't add up.

It takes 10m^2 panels for 1KW power in direct sunlight.

The Edge screen is about 100mm x 50mm, or 0.005m^2, which would produce about 0.5W

The Edge battery is about 3000mAh at 5V, is about 15Wh.

To recharge a 15Wh battery at 0.5W would take 30hours of direct sunlight.

Would be better to take a phone charger or an external battery pack.

  • do not forget the fridge and microwave functions !!!??? never forget it is first off all a GPS !

a bigger screen (if it is possible with the same size, it is not a must) and a SD reader will be a good upgrade
