Trailforks unlock (yet again)

I have two separate 830 MTB Bundles, one is mine which I've had since it came out and the other is my wife's purchased a week or so ago new.

I've followed every bit of instructions I can find and both of them still give me the "Map cannot be unlocked" (or whatever that actual text is) message when attempting to unlock trail forks. They're paired to different phones, and different trail fork accounts. In both cases they can see courses in trail forks on the device so we know that they're actually talking to trail forks they just don't unlock the maps, so we only have the 2019 map and haven't gotten a new one.

We have tried deleting trail forks and re-downloading, re-pairing, and re-connecting with connect, nothing seems to solve this problem. I have also tried with the phone on wi-fi, and not, with the garmin on wi-fi and not. I've got a 2 week thread with Garmin (although they've not said anything since this past Monday) on it, and still no resolution. It seems really weird to me that two devices with nothing in common (separate phones, separate garmin connect accounts, separate trail forks accounts) are doing this unless there's just a fundamental bug here.

If anyone has any thoughts that I might not have already tried please let me know.

thank you

  • classic garmin is what this is- hardware that should be identical but somehow isn't in regards to software updates and suffers from random failures that can never be explained- I had an 810 that would crash and hard reset if I kept more than a months worth of activities, the vast majority of them never had that problem but I know of a few others that did.

I'm gonna leave it plugged into Express on the assumption that my particular copy of express (despite being identical to everyone else's), only chats with the update servers two, three times a day a max. Its as plausible as anything else with how different your 830's and mine is behaving.

  • Since we are talking about Trailforks: is anyone else not able to open TF on the Edge since 8.0 anymore? I always get an error, that the TF App from the Connect IQ store is note installed (which of course it is. I mean, i‘m clicking on it for this error to appear…). I uninstalled it several times, did several hard resets, but to no avail. Talked to the guys from TF, who were very helpful, and it seems like it‘s a problem with 8.0. Just curious if there are others with this problem too.

  • I could finally get into trailforks fine once I was updated to 8.0, just couldn't get the current map set (stuck on 2019.10, which is pretty out of date in my area) on my replacement device. Which makes no sense at all since I should've been prompted to update pretty fast with Express on the pc once they were unlocked.  Of course about an hour into having 8.0, the damn thing started to reboot whenever I tried to select a different profile and refused to hold any changes I had made (hard resets fixed it for an hour or so before it succumbed to reboots again). My first replacement device is heading back to Garmin as result and there is another one working its way to me.

If the next one has the current trailforks map set and I can unlock it- I'm not updating after this fiasco, it's not worth the risk.

  • Interesting, thx. Curious what might be the problem.

Btw, I'm too stuck on 2019.10, didn't even know there is supposed to be an update.

  • there's usually two a year ( the 20XX.10 and 20XX.20 updates) with new trails at least in my area appearing on the 2nd update following their entry into the trailforks database. If your area is stable and all the trails on the map set, you'd honestly never even notice the updates or the lack thereof.

  • actually my MTB buddies report that they happen nearly weekly in our area but most of them are updating monthly. instead. Since I didn't realise it wasn't working this is my first experience with it. What I don't know is do I still see and route with it when it still shows "Map Locked" need to try a route now

  • the website updates rapidly as people load new trails, the phone app lags a little behind the web (usually good enough to use in the woods when confronted with an confusing junction) and the garmin device app updates whenever they (garmin) gets around to it... Usually twice a year in my experience.  I don't know how fast the downloadable garmin trailforks maps update (https://www.trailforks.com/tools/garminmaps/ )- I don't use them as they don't have nor allow for the topo overlays I can get on the 830 thru the CIQ app. Which is what I really want, to know what the trail I'm looking at does for climbing and descending.

Before mine unlocked (and the device destabilized) on the 8.0 update, I was able to sign in and navigate a route. Which makes no sense as the maps aren't unlocked but somehow are... That confused the tech rep I was talking to as well. Something odd is going on with these devices and the software getting pushed out.
