Disappointing navigation

Did an MTB ride today that had 4 loss of of a main loop. This was my first ride in this area so I was counting on my 830 to provide navigating as it's advertised to do.

Very disappointing that my 830 misdirected me and tried to eliminate 2 of the loops. Luckily, the GF had an 810 which provided correct navigation.

Both the 830 and 810 had the same OSM loaded.

Garmin-get your act together. Why does an older unit process better navigation which is a core function of this device?

Garmin-before adding bling like flow, grit jumps, climb pro etc you should really get the basics working much better.

  • I am so disappointed with the device that I do not want to use it anymore. First it starts on its own. I keep on stopping it all the time. Second, I upload routes from Komoot but it never follows the track correctly. At some point it is lost and when this s... happens it keeps me telling me to go back all the time even if I am on the right track again. Frankly speaking it is very annoying and I am wondering wether I must give up and swap for another one or use my smartphone. Unless a solution is found through updates to correct all the troubles.

Yes, I've made exactly the same experience. And with firmware 7.19 beta navigation has'nt got better. I sent the issues to the German service several months ago and in different posts of this and the German forum but nothing happens.
For me it's incomprehensible that the 830 wants me to change from a cycle way to the road and back again several times although the loaded track is exact on the cycle way.
Very frustating. Compared with my former Edge 1000 the navigation of the 830 has got worse.

  • What is my experience is that often (really often) the prompted turn screen that appears just before you are approaching a turn is wrong and shows a drawing of the turn totally different from what is the real path (e.g. you are reaching a roundabout and the 830 shows a three way road like a Y)

In this case the unit is displaying the correct turn image but there is a bug where the map displayed in this screen is sometimes zoomed in too much.  This means you don't see the whole roundabout, you just see the roundabout flares leading up to it which look like a Y.  If you manually zoomed the map page in you would see the same map image.

This may be the reason. But this bug exists for me since I bought the 830 in July 2019. And since then there were several software updates and the bug still exists.

  • The issue has existed since the unit came out.  I agree that it should have been fixed by now and it is annoying.

  • Sorry but I don't think so. I have a couple of pictures I took. One is the popup screen of suggested turn and the other is the real turn on the map screen. It is no a matter of zoom level. I tried the attach here them but it seems it doesn't work.

As not all turn screens are wrong you easily see when you get a faulty turn.

  • Yes I think so I always had this issue  but when I purchased the device I did many trails just using the map screen with speed and heart rate fields on the bottom and looking at other parameters at home from Garmin Connect. Then, when I setup all my screen pages and start to use them, I realized there is something wrong.
