Edge 830 bluetooth connection issues (BLE connection but no BT connection)

Since about a month or so I cannot seem to get my iPhone to connect to my Edge 830 via bluetooth. No matter what I do, the phone won't connect to the Edge after the first pairing. I've tried...

  • forget (and pair again) the edge and phone on both devices multiple times
  • factory reset of the edge
  • factory reset of the phone
  • update the edge
  • update the phone

All of these actions haven't solved the problem. What's fascinating, is that BLE (low energy bluetooth) does connect but both the edge and phone show no connection sync error. How to solve this problem?

  • I too have an iPhone 12 to which my 830 will not connect despite numerous attempts and techniques found here an on other sites. The iPhone notes that the 830 is Connected (BT) while the 830 sits and waits for the phone. During other attempts I can get both devices to report the same code after the handshake - the 830 then goes into the same wait mode. BLE mode never shows up on the iPhone.

With respect to the firmware remarks below: I agree. I had the 830 connected to an iPhone-7 for two years. With the new 7.0 on the Edge and the new iPhone, the problems began. BT and BLE connections were ported to the iPhone 12 during the phone upgrade.  Per other trouble shooting recommendations, I deleted the two ported connections and started over.No technique has worked. The iPhone is now connected to the PC and the 830 reports that no new software updates are available - despite the note below by anyuser that he/she has 7.10 installed.

Gamin Connect version is 3.2.4. EPO: expired.

Some firmware tech needs to bring 2x4 to his bosses desk and ask for a sense of urgency. We deserve a working solution per our purchase agreement - otherwise Garmin has a false advertising problem.

As I recently noted on Amazon: "Great news - Elon Musk’s SpaceX successfully landed its Starship spacecraft on a full test flight. It is technology beyond wonderful - but Garmin still can't get its simple Bluetooth issues fixed."

I might now add the proverbial assertion: BT is not rocket science.

  • Not that I was going to quit trying - although the 830 did. It froze while waiting for the phone. Can't even turn it off. Of absolutely no use in that mode!

  • For any of the Garmin IT section that may be paying any attention to these observations, here is some more feedback from the series of  6 status -screens following a hard reboot:

    1) Screen-1. The time shows12:11 which is correct. The iPhone is noted as connected via Bluetooh- and the 830 gives its proper name.  That matches with the status on the iPhone 12. Bluetooth censors are working on the 830 : heart & cadence (which is at the other end of the house).

    2)  Screen-2. No missed notifications.

    3) Screen-3. Controls are active - except for Start Live Tack which the wife wants working. As do I. Screen says "no recipients" - but that must because the iPhone is not connected - except it is on screen 1.

    4) Screen-4. Weather requires phone connection - which is supposed to be active based upon screen 1.

    5) Screen-5. Unable to find GPS location - but I am indoors while charging the 830. Outdoors GPS is found and  the Segment Explore is populated

    6) Screen-6. My emergency data is present.

So all problems point to the iPhone-830 handshake. One of the two systems is not up to the task. There still is no BLE connection on the iPhone Bluetooth screen that was once part of the iPhone 7 setup.

I do have WiFi active on the 830.

  • And then the magic happens: after sending the above reply the 830 connected to the phone with BLE, then to Connect and a sync occurred. Weather is active. Live Track is active.

Oddly, this all apparently happened because the 830 froze and had to be hard rebooted ... and after the extended description above.

And the 830 is still running 7.00, while EPO is now Current; yesterday it was Expired.

This has been painful to the extreme.

Of course today's ride is over...I am banking on a working 830 for tomorrow's ride.

  • One more thought, Mr. Garmin.

Perhaps a FAQ could be added to at least the Edge 830 files/blog that would advise iPhone users who upgrade to a newer iPhone (and who encounter the failure to connect issue) that the first step in the process of resolution would be a hard reboot. It would appear (and Garmin lab testing might confirm) that a hard reboot will clear what amounts to cache related to the earlier iPhone hardware. Still, that does not account for my minutes-long delay after the reboot before getting the BLE link established.
