Edge 830 bluetooth connection issues (BLE connection but no BT connection)

Since about a month or so I cannot seem to get my iPhone to connect to my Edge 830 via bluetooth. No matter what I do, the phone won't connect to the Edge after the first pairing. I've tried...

  • forget (and pair again) the edge and phone on both devices multiple times
  • factory reset of the edge
  • factory reset of the phone
  • update the edge
  • update the phone

All of these actions haven't solved the problem. What's fascinating, is that BLE (low energy bluetooth) does connect but both the edge and phone show no connection sync error. How to solve this problem?

  • Hi. I have the same problem, what works for me is that I toggle Bluetooth on/off/on on the phone and then it connects, I have to do this everytime.

  • Thanks. Sounds like a fairly workable solution, but obviously it should just work.

  • I have to do similar to what  WhiteJ71 posted on every ride, except I can toggle BT on and off on EITHER my phone,or my Garmin and it then connects to my phone.  It seems to always connect after the toggle on either device.  Never has done this before, it almost always connected automatically in the year or so I've had the 830.

  • Same problem but I have experienced it for a very long time. I have tried everything and it still connects maybe 10% of the time. Garmin has never responded to my inquiries about the problem and nobody else has a solution. Maybe time for a Wahoo.

  • Same here, only thing i haven't tried yet is rolling back to a firmware that works.

  • maybe try messing with the BT name settings on the device. The one shown on my phone doesnt match with the "friendly name" in the settings on the edge. for me it doesnt fix the problem but if i change it back and forth a bit i can at least get it to connect at all

  • Bassofreak, thank you this seems to have worked for me.  The steps i took are as above but with your suggestion of renaming the device so:

1 I deleted the bluetooth connections on my iphone -  both BT and BLE

2 I removed the iphone connection on my Edge 830

3 I deleted the garmin connect app on my iphone

    4 Rebooted both devices

5 Changed the name of my Garmin from 'Edge 830' to just '830'.

6  Installed the Connect app on the phone and went though the pairing and connect process in the app.

7  This was the interesting part. Despite having deleted  the 'Edge 830' bluetooth connections on the iphone in step 1, Ii now saw the two new BLE and BT connections named '830' on the phone but a third with the old name 'Edge 830' had reappeared.  So I deleted that.

My 830 now has been connecting to the iphone on startup automatically for the last few days.

  • Which model iPhone do you have, and what iOS version? Also, do you happen to know what SW version you are running on your 830?

I am glad your steps worked for you, but that is obviously far more troubleshooting than we would expect a user to have to go through before a solid connection is made.

  • I have done everything but rename the Garmin Edge. I have an IPhone 12 with the latest updates and the Garmin has been updated. The BT connection rarely works. If it does work it's because I have manually connected it. I have contacted Garmin in the past and they have yet to resolve the issue. I am wondering if a Class Action Lawsuit would be worth a try. We have all spent lots of money on a device that does not work as advertised.

  • Thanks, I have an iphone XS running 14.5.1.  The edge 830 is on 7.10.

I am pretty sure the connection problems started after a Garmin firmware update rather than an iphone update but cannot be sure which one now unless i try rolling back to eg 6.xx which i dont want to do unless this fix stops working.  I persevered with the bluetooth toggle fix for a while but it was tedious and hope this renaming fix has solved it so will continue to monitor as I dont mind troubleshooting :-) as long as i can get it working.
