This topic has been discussed repeatedly and is a frequent complaint. It's probably my biggest gripe about the 830 (after the deplorable mountain bike route navigation). The problem with the workaround…
Very very very annoying.
We need an answer from Garmin.
why can Virtual Partner not be disabled?

Yep…
It's not just a dot -- it's an arrow that is LARGER than the rider's location arrow. It's distracting. If it was actually smaller I wouldn't be quite as annoyed. But what is equally frustrating is that for some reason, Garmin thinks the virtual partner should always be there when navigating a course, rather than being an optional "feature" or accessory that the user can decide if he/she wants to use.
Depending on the sunlight it may be difficult to read the screen. In addition, depending on the traffic you don't have a lot time to check it.
That's why a second cursor with alike color and shape can be very confusing (especially if it occurs only sometimes, e.g. after a pizza stop - which is mostly downtown).
My old 810 had the ability to turn off VP on a course-by-course basis. Obviously it would be better to have a general setting to turn off VP.
They have the technology to allow the users to turn it off, but for some reason they won't implement it.
I think that Garmin simply has not had very many complaints about the Virtual Partner. I'm sure that many of the people who have posted negative comments about VP on the forum have let Garmin know that they want a on / off option but there are many thousands of users that simply don't care about it. Garmin needs to hear more complaints before they respond.
I'll back that.
At least add the option to disable the function.
