This topic has been discussed repeatedly and is a frequent complaint. It's probably my biggest gripe about the 830 (after the deplorable mountain bike route navigation). The problem with the workaround…
Very very very annoying.
We need an answer from Garmin.
why can Virtual Partner not be disabled?

Yep…
Not possible to turn it off on the 830, you could on the Edge 800. You can reduce the speed of the virtual partner though!
what is the preferred method slowing down VP? Setting it to 0 would be nice.
This topic has been discussed repeatedly and is a frequent complaint. It's probably my biggest gripe about the 830 (after the deplorable mountain bike route navigation). The problem with the workaround of reducing the VP's speed is that it must be done every time a course is started. That means going into the activity profile to add the VP screen back in, repeatedly tapping to reduce the speed to 10% (won't go to 0), then going back into the activity profile settings to hide the VP screen. It's a nuisance. It would be a million times better if Garmin simply gave its users a way to disable the VP permanently, rather than forcing us to deal with annoying work-arounds to eliminate this distraction.
Once you've started a ride scroll through your screens until you get to the virtual partner, at the top there is a banner with 100% on it, tap on the minus button to reduce his speed. I've found if you plot a route on Garmin connect on a laptop you can enter an average speed that you hope to achieve, this will then be the virtual partners speed!

Yep, since time immemorial on all Edge devices. It's just weird that Garmin doesn't allow disabling it after so many complaints going back years and years on Edges that had the virtual partner.
As far as MTB navigating a course, I find it mainly depends on the quality of the mapping. In some areas it's basically useless and in other areas it's fine. In the useless areas, I just display the course on the map rather than have the Edge navigate it.
The good old Edge 810 has the ability to turn off Virtual Partner. It seems perfectly reasonable that Garmin could figure out a way for us to be able to turn off VP. They just added VP to virtual rides...why can't they let us turn VP off for real rides?
Agree!
Garmin, please add the ability disable virtual partner!
