This topic has been discussed repeatedly and is a frequent complaint. It's probably my biggest gripe about the 830 (after the deplorable mountain bike route navigation). The problem with the workaround…
Very very very annoying.
We need an answer from Garmin.
why can Virtual Partner not be disabled?

Yep…
You have to be kidding. I've submitted a feature request to disable this most annoying intrusion through the ideas webform at least a dozen times. It is one of the most frequent requests on this forum. I think whoever you spoke with had no clue.
It still baffles me that Garmin would program the VP to be a mandatory function. It's insane.
I'm about ready to start a Go Fund Me campaign to find a developer to create a Connect IQ app that lets us shut this thing off once and for all.
I can generally ignore the VP, if the route is hilly it will zoom off early and I never see it again, somewhere along the ride there is a message saying it has finished. What is really getting up my nose are these direction arrows, pointless, useless and most annoying and also no way I can turn them off (other than reverting to 7.10 which I have done.)
Actually I don't need a config option. Destroying the feature is fine for me either.
Do you know how/where to manipulate the VP icon? Maybe it can be set transparent or 1x1 pixels. Is it stored separately, baked into an image or some kind of database? I would like to switch the sound for crossing announcement as well.
I agree that Garmin should provide a option to turn off Virtual partner but I don't understand why it is so annoying to many users. It's just a dot on the screen.
DING DONG VP has finnished....hahahah . This VP is just a big joke. The only difference with PAC-man back in the 80's was that you had to flip in a coin.
