Garmin Tempe sensor connectivity for the Edge series

Hi All,

After I purchased an Edge 830 and realized that the Tempe sensor is not supported (weird) I wrote a Tempe datafield and a widget for the Edge series.

Datafield: https://apps.garmin.com/en-US/apps/bedd1447-4816-40a9-83e1-0ed22c5bbcc3

Widget: https://apps.garmin.com/en-US/apps/22dc8040-24d9-4a31-b8a2-d50cb4892482

Please, let me know if you have any issue with them and enjoy,

  • Also, after half an hour spent powered on, without any hand contact it is clear that the internal temp sensor shows about 4 degrees more than the Tempe sensor

P.S. the AC in the room is set to 26 degrees too

  • result from Saturday ride - i've added both data field and widget

widget behaved like in my previous post - continuous searching

data field - it worked at the beginning then I've got an IQ error. I've replaced the data field with the same tempe data field and it worked again....for some time...then it was gone with that error showing.

I've replaced it 4 or 5 times and then I've stopped doing that.

Do not know if it was relevant or not - the data field was on a screen i was checking from time to time, not my primary data screen which i use 90% of a ride.

here's the graph from Tempe with the Internal Temperature overlay

  • Make me wonder how reliable those device’s really are. Look at the sleep tracking, at least my tracking, but i see a lot of other complains too. Regarding to that i have tons of awake time during the night, and thats absolutely wrong.

  • Hi ,

Thank you for your feedback, I have managed to reproduce the issue. The reason is that it seems the same device cannot open 2 different ANT+ channels to the same Tempe sensor. That means, currently it is not possible to use the datafield and the widget one the same device at the same time.

When for example, the datafield is installed in the Road profile, you turn the Edge on and it shows you the Road profile the datafields in that profile are initialized in the background which means that the Tempe connection is already active and the widget won't work.

I will try to find out a workaround for that (maybe using only an RX channel rather than an RX/TX one) when I have some time but until that what you can do is to disable the widget while you are recording an activity. The same way, if you want to use the widget while you are not recording anything then just switch to a bike profile in which the datafield is not installed then open the widget. It works for me this way.

    Very nice ride btw, congratulations!

  • Thank you for your feedback. I disabled the widget and the data field since then.

I will add back the data field only and see how it behaves. From my point of view just the data field is enough(i do not see myself switching to the widget while riding)

    Very nice ride btw, congratulations!

Thx mate. It was indeed a beautiful ride

  • I had a ride today. Data field was added. Widget was disabled.

The data field showed the temperature for some minutes then again that iq error in my previous pictures.

P.s. did not checked if you made a new version available for the data field. So the initial installation was on the edge

  • yesterday's ride - same story. It worked for a few minutes. Later when i switched to the screen where the data field was added - the same error was present

    connect.garmin.com/.../5506548557

  • I've now uninstalled both data field and widget.

Reinstalled the data field only. Kept it opened on my table for half an hour - no error, yet.

Will see on Saturday ride how it behaves

  • I'm also seeing the same problem. Using the data field only.

Edge 830 with latest firmware and GPS firmware.

Other sensors connected by ANT+: power meter, heart rate monitor, speed/cadence sensor, Varia radar & light, and bluetooth to my phone.

Doesn't seem to matter whether the data field is on my primary page or not. It'll be OK for up to 25 mins or so then the field shows an error. Re-adding it again allows it to reconnect to the sensor.

    Here's today's ride: https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/5522987511

There are 3 obvious dropouts but there's another one at 0:27:22 where I noticed immediately and reconnected the sensor before the 1 minute polling period passed.

Hope you can get this working properly because riding in Australia with the Edge on the handlebars in the sun causes crazy readings sometimes. The Tempe sensor under the seat is a much better solution.

  • I'm wondering what is the need for more temperature accuracy? How is it used in your training?
