Activity profile completely disappeared in the middle of a ride

During a road ride today, I noticed that the data screens on my Edge were suddenly all different from what I had started with.  I had no idea what would have caused this, so I went to the home screen and found that it was set on a different activity profile.  However, the profile that I started with, the one I use most frequently, was gone!  

I have (or had, I should say) four profiles set up on my Edge:  two road profiles and two mountain profiles.  I do this to track distance separately for each bike, and also because only one of my road bikes has a power meter, so the data fields are different.  Now there are only three.

I finished the ride on my other road profile, but even those data fields were completely different from what I normal have them set to.

What could have caused this?  Has anyone else had this happen?  Is that profile now completely lost (and therefore so is the total distance ridden under that profile)?  Any way to restore it?  This is highly, highly frustrating.

    I am on version 5.50.   Thanks for the link.  I was able to restore the missing profile from the backup as instructed but the unfortunately the totals aren't there for that profile.  When I go into History -> Totals, it shows 170 ft for that profile, and when I tap into the profile, it actually shows totals from one of the others.  

    So it's kind of a drag that I lost all my ride, time, distance etc. totals for that bike (I've got probably 6000 miles on it)  but at least I have the data screens back.

    It's kinda late now, but having used various Garmin Edge units for 10+ years, I don't rely on them for storing my data and stats because of the crashes and other wack behavior necessitating resets, down reving firmware, etc... so I regularly upload saved rides, courses, profiles and other data to my PC and/or on-line sites

    I save the courses and activities to my computer as well as upload them to appropriate on-line sites.

    I also save the Courses, Records, Settings, Sports, and Totals folders from the Edge to my computer.

    I have my Edge set to automatically upload every activity to Garmin Connect after each ride, so everything is saved there.  I could figure out the totals from Connect, but there's no way to get that data back onto my Edge.  So my Edge sees the previously deleted profile as brand new.
