Garmin 830 stops recording mid-ride

New Garmin 830

Has stopped recording speed and distance during two rides and will not restart recording. I have only used it on two rides, and the behavior is the same on both rides.

The unit will not update speed or distance but 'time of ride' will continue to change.

All "auto" features are turned off.

The unit needs to simply record my ride.  There is a clutter of 'features' with unclear purpose in the device.

How do I have the 830 record my ride, without stopping, for my entire ride?  If the unit does stop, how can it be restarted?

  • What sensors do you have?  Are you using a speed sensor or just GPS to determine speed?  What satellite setting are you using?  Are you sure you have turned off the Auto Stop/Start?

One theory about this is that the Auto Stop happens because GPS is being used to detect movement, and that fails.  And then it fails to start again.

Other people on this forum (and possibly other Edge forums) seem to have had this problem; perhaps they have gotten better answers than mine.  I've never seen this issue, personally.

On today's ride, the unit stopped updating distance and speed 5+ times.

The only way to get it properly displaying again was power cycle the device.

What is the fix to this issue?

  • Hi,
I have the same problem. Now I have second device Garmin 830, the first one it was complained. But second one have same bug :(

I tried disabled heartrate band, cadence sensor, nothing .. I tried GPS only, GPS-Glonass and GPS-galileo, nothing ... I even tried FW 5.34, 5.44, 5.48 and even the official 5.50 = all the same error.

Now i prepare second complaint and I hope for third device Garmin 830 is will good?!

I use Garmin devices from 2011 a this type is first with problems, but this is already frustrating.

Example my problem from same time/same ride ( 2 devices ):

    Garmin Edge 500:

    Garmin Edge 830:

  • hi,

i had the same problems ...

seems that the cadans sensor is given trouble. i used a GSC10 (very old one)...

  • I have GSC10 too, maybe this is way to fix this.

Yesterday I made ride without sensor ( cadence and HR ) and without bugs. I will tested it next week and we will see.

  • this is what i posted on a other discussion :

    hi,

i bought my 830 in april...

the first month, i had several times this issue (even on the same ride).

i was ready to give the 830 back (and get a new one in place), but i discover something when i change my bike.

my first bike had a cadance sensor GSC 10 (the very old one), the second bike a power meter Vector 2. with the second bike, no problem with the 830.

i install on my second bike also an GSC10 (this came from my indoor-trainer bike) and did some tests. there were no problems in the beginning, until one day I rode on cobblestones and the unit freeze again. I discover that the magnetic holder was a bit displaced and put it right on place. after that, no problem again for a while.

my first bike had a crank problem and therefor the magnetic isn't on the right place => that give the freeze unit issue.

i read that the GSC isn't compatible with the 820, and maybe also with the 830. but when mounted correctly, it's working...

    m

conclusion : it's maybe a sensor problem that give a freez unit

My issue appears resolved by stopping the use of the older GSC-10 sensor.

While the 830 sees it, it evidently doesn't play well with the GSC-10.

After being advised by Garmin support to try a ride without it, I removed it from my bike and the ride recorded fine.

I believe this was the cause of the issue.

I'm glad that it seems fixed, but perhaps the 830 should not recognize the older sensor if it is a known issue.

    Good luck to you all.

  • I've been using the GSC10 for several months with the 830 a while back, and never had an issue with it. Bear in mind that if the Edge has a configured speed sensor (GSC10 or any other), it will rely on it for speed and distance measurements, instead of on the GPS data. That means that a misaligned magnet with a GSC10 leads to zero speed and distance on the Edge, so just like you're stopped.

  • Yes, it is clear. But my problem occurs with the GSC10, but without recording the speed with the magnet. I use GSC10 only as a cadence sensor, without a magnet.

  • i'm also  using the GSC10 for cadence only. when GPS modus is on then the speed is taken from the GPS, no ?

in my wheel i didn't install the magnet ... so the GSC detect no speed signal and the GPS takes over.
