Garmin 830 stops recording mid-ride

New Garmin 830

Has stopped recording speed and distance during two rides and will not restart recording. I have only used it on two rides, and the behavior is the same on both rides.

The unit will not update speed or distance but 'time of ride' will continue to change.

All "auto" features are turned off.

The unit needs to simply record my ride.  There is a clutter of 'features' with unclear purpose in the device.

How do I have the 830 record my ride, without stopping, for my entire ride?  If the unit does stop, how can it be restarted?

  • I didn't installed the magnet too. With previous Garmin ( 510 and 500 ) i haven't problem. If you haven't magnet, speed goes from GPS. All time. If is on 830 different, i don't know. But if 830 wait for signal from GSC without magnet on speed, i think is it a bug.

  • If the 830 has been paired with a speed sensor, this takes absolute priority over the GPS, whether or not that speed sensor sends signals. From the GSC10 manual it kind of appears that the cadence sensor data is always recorded, while only the speed sensor part would require pairing - I doubt that this is true, but I cannot check that right now as I don't have access to a GSC10 anymore. In any case, if you paired the GSC10 with the 830, and you did not disable that speed/cadence sensor in the 830 software, the 830 will not will derive the speed from the GPS data.

Disclaimer: statements based on memory and Garmin documentation - both of them are far from perfect Wink

  • Yesterday I took the second ride with the GSC10 sensor off. And I have to confirm, the problem did not arise. Probably really will be a bug in the GSC10 with 830.
But it doesn't matter, I took the sensor off the bike and I will use Garmin separately.

Thanks for reply all of you :)
