Garmin Connect Fails complete set-up of Edge 830 on Samsung S8

Connect repeatedly fails to complete setup of Edge830 my Samsung S8 upon initial pairing. I have spent hours following the troubleshooting tips and on the phone with support. Has anyone figured out WTF? The devices pair and the setup starts but hangs up every time. I've done resets, updates, uninstall/reinstall, bluetooth toggles, you name it.
I really want to enjoy this device but I'm about to punt and send it back. Please help!

  • Pairing and setup works fine on my S8.  Try this:  Uninstall the Garmin app on you phone.  Delete the BT 830 connections on the phone (there may be two of them).  Delete you phone BT from the 830.  Power them both off, then both on.  Install the Garmin app from the Play store.  Start the app and go through the sign in and initialization process, including the in app pairing process.  Do not pair from the BT screen on your phone.

    Thanks for the response. I had done this several times but tried it once again after updating the 830 with Garmin Express. Unfortunately I had the same result. It apparently successfully pairs  and begins setup but hangs up. It asks to Retry and I do several times with no luck. I am going to go through it one last time with Support . If not successful I will punt and share my experience. 

  • Bummer.  The next things I'd try is a factory reset of the 830 and ensuring the 830 and phone software were up to date.  Maybe try turning wifi off on the 830, not that necessary makes any sense...  after that, IDK. 

  • Are you re-pairing it, or this is initial setup?

    If initial setup, all the pairing is done on the Garmin Connect app, that is, do NOT go to the phone's settings and pair it there. if you did this, then remove it in your phone's settings. Making the BT connection on the phone's settings is the most common mistake with pairing issues.

    If re-pairing, then you'll need to unpair the BT on your phone from the device. You'll also need to unpair your device from the phone by "Settings -> Connected Features -> Phone -> (Enable) -> Smart Phone -> Forget phone"

    Then try again.

    Thanks for the reply. This is the initial setup although after failing the first try the screens on the 830 look different. I do not have an option on the 830 to "forget phone". I can only enable/disable pairing. I was on with tech support yesterday and they tried to walk me through it after checking Edge software and Connect versions, resetting, etc. After no success they had me send screen shots and use a feature on the app to send an app log to them. They told me they have had multiple reports of this issues with Android phones. Hopefully they will get to the bottom of this and send an update or work around soon.

    I now have a case # and contact at support so I will give them a chance to redeem, but I won't wait forever.

  • Did you resolve this issue? I have the exact same problem, I can't get the 830 to pair to my phone on initial setup. I've taken all the same steps with no luck. I've even gone thru the setup on my wife's phone and was able to successfully connect to her Android, but my S8 just won't connect.

    I still cannot pair my S8 sucessfully.. I have an S8 Active ,originally an ATT phone which was unlocked and on T Mobile. This has caused so other app compatibility  issues. Not sure if that is the case here.

    Have you had any luck?

    Still no fix from Garmin. It's been 3 months now. Come on people, I want to use Trailforks! That is the main reason I bought this device.

    GARMIN? Is there anybody out there? Just nod if you can hear me.

  • You don't need to pair a phone to your Garmin to use Trailforks.  You can just plug it into a computer running Garmin Express if you need to sync anything.
