Does anyone else have a hard time seeing the display when outside? I have brightness on manual at 100% and can barely see the screen.

I've had my 830 for about a month. downsized from an Edge 1000. The visibility of the screen sucks when outside, especially in tree cover. I have the brightness at 100%, and auto is turned off. It doesn't seem to matter either way, it is still next too impossible to see the display. Never had this issue with my 1000. It was great in all conditions.  Its easily visible is you hold it at a 45* angle, but nobody is going to ride with it like that.  What's youre experience?

  • I cant recall that my 810 was this bad in sunlight (I have the 530). With the touch screen on the 810 it was easy to switch on the backlight by touching the screen, but on the 530 you have to push a button, which shows some information on the screen or changes the display to another data screen, which means you have to push another button to get it back to the screen you want to view... this is anyoing, and wouldnt be an issue if the screen was not sub standard. cant read outside, even on 100% brightness.

  • I just bought an 830 and find the screen way too dark as well. I thought something was wrong with the device but reading these comments it seems normal.  I just can't figure it out as there are so many reviews praising the screen readibilty.

Today i set it to 90% fixed which didn't help much and then the battery was drained to 55% after only a 3.5 hour ride without navigation, normal GPS, Bluetooth and an HR band.i am quite disappointed.

There IS something wrong with your device. In daylight with no backlight  I am constantly amazed by the clarity and easiness to read the screen even without direct sunlight on it, I would rate this aspect as near perfect (it does have other "issues"  though). Another great feature is the battery life, I get 40+ hours (no backlight, no BT/Wi-Fi, only speed & cadence sensors, follow course but without "turn guidance" )

Are you using polarised sun glasses? Some do effect the viewing of the screen. I find the best viewing angle is for the device is near horizontal and fairly directly below or slightly forward of my head.

  • Thanks, sun glasses don't make much difference.  I think i'll take it to the shop to compare with a demo model.
