Does anyone else have a hard time seeing the display when outside? I have brightness on manual at 100% and can barely see the screen.

I've had my 830 for about a month. downsized from an Edge 1000. The visibility of the screen sucks when outside, especially in tree cover. I have the brightness at 100%, and auto is turned off. It doesn't seem to matter either way, it is still next too impossible to see the display. Never had this issue with my 1000. It was great in all conditions.  Its easily visible is you hold it at a 45* angle, but nobody is going to ride with it like that.  What's youre experience?

  • I have no problem viewing my 830 with no backlight on during the day.  Are you wearing tinted eyewear?  Are you wearing eyewear with polarised lenses?

  • Actually I find the 830 much eaiser to read than my 800 was.  Even with polarized prescription glasses.  I did have to play around with the angle of the out front mount a bit but nothing like 45 degrees...

  • no tinted or polarized eye wear. I'm starting to wonder if it's just the position of the sun in the sky. It's pretty low here in winter.

  • The Sun is pretty low in the early morning and evening everywhere irrespective of season or latitude.  I have no issues with visibility or readability of the screen.  Perhaps you can find a dealer nearby where you can compare yours to their display/demo unit and see if it's different and possibly defective.

  • I agree. When using the navigation map it's not the easiest screen to see in sunlight, especially with fingerprints on the screen.

It's easier to see on an overcast day though.

If I were you, I'd angle it so you can see it. Who cares what it looks like on your bike or what anyone else thinks.

My new 830 is hard to see when in the sun. I've tried brightness at 100% both with and without the auto adjust turned on and I also have a hard time seeing it. I'd love to know if there is a solution or do I just send it back?

  • I moved up from an Edge 130 to 830 recently. I've been on several rides with the 830 and the screen visibility is awful. I'm already regretting the purchase. The 830's capabilities are endless, but what does it matter if you can't see the thing? Before sunrise the backlight works well enough, but as soon as the sun comes up the ambient light overpowers the wimpy backlight. The only way this thing is truly legible outside is when the sun is striking it directly at a 90° angle to the screen. I suppose if I rode in the middle of the day that might be possible. But I live on the edge of the Mohave Desert. Mid-day riding is not an option.

  •   With polarised sunglasses the sc been is impossible to see. Like in many smartphones. Look with other glasses.

I have trouble seeing anything made after the Edge 1000 while in the woods (mountain biking).  These newer models look great under sunlight, but horrid in the dark with the backlight on.  Also, as others have said, polarized sunglasses can make it difficult.
