FTP test fails

Hi all,

yesterday I tried to perform FTP test with my Edge 830 for the first time.

My current determined FTP from Garmin is 208 W (should be quite a bit higher).

First I started with 20 minutes with very easy cycling, then realized that I have to push lap button to start with the core FTP test.

Then first block was 215 W for 4 minutes, followed by 235, 260, 280 and ultimately 305 for 3 minutes.

After short 3 minute cool down periode, I received message that FTP could not be calculated based on the training. Please try again.

That is quite frustrating... seems that the FTP test is not realiable.

And there is also no way to repeat it the same day as it was exhausting. Anybody who has experienced the same?

That's the link to my activity: https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/4263345922

Did I anything wrong?

Regards,

Peter

  • good luck, if you do with Zwift, they disable ERG mode in their FTP Test, in other 3rd party software it's possible that you have do disable it manually

  • With Trainerroad erg mode is on for the ramp FTP test and off for the 2x8 and 20 minutes tests during the test intervals.  You can turn erg mode off in the ramp version and do it manually if you want to.

  • Yeah.  There are many ways of determining an FTP number, and they will all produce somewhat different results.  If you want to quantify your relative fitness or response to training, stick with one method, optimally doing it at the same time of day, with same amount of rest beforehand, similar state of nutrition, etc.

  • Is anyone else having these dropouts with Edge 830 when it comes to power?
I'm in contact with Wahoo now, because I always see these power dropouts during my activities.
Other sensors like hrm and cadence do not have any drop outs.
Also my Assioma Favero pedals do not have any drop outs but these I don't connect when riding indoors.

I have frequent drop-outs of power and speed when connected to my Tacx vortex. This didnt happen in previous versions. Hope its fixed when the new beta is stable.

  • Seen that hrm and powermeter do not have any drop outs, it must be something they did with the communication between smart trainer and edge. I noticed that when I have the drop outs, it finds the smart trainer right after it.

  • Yesterday I rode with latest 5.03 beta version on my Edge.

Unfortunately, there are still these dropouts with the powermeter readings from Wahoo KICKR Core.

  • Same with latest stable 5.1.
