Bogus Turn Notification

While navigating on winding roads I get bogus turn notifications. I get a pop-up that there's a turn when in fact the road just curves.

Garmin: Please consider an algorithm like if the name of the road is the same entering the turn and exiting the turn then it's not a turn - it's just a curvy road.

Sometimes it is. Sometimes it isn't. I would rather be notified of turns that aren't really turns than miss turns.

What does the Garmin do in these two cases?

These are both roundabouts, which have their own special issues.

Not sure, I've not ridden there recently.

Oddly now that I look closely, although Google Maps and Garmin Connect Web show roundabouts for the first one, OSM itself shows the old T-junction which used to be there and that Google Maps Streetview shows. https://www.openstreetmap.org/query?lat=-33.76133&lon=151.00404

This one is on Gibraltar Rd. The nearest intersection is over two miles away.

Strictly speaking there's an intersection with the driveway of the house right on that corner. OSM has this defined as a service road, which I'm not sure is correct but I'm no OSM editing expert.

I think Garmin are misinterpreting the OSM data and have wrongly defined intersections. I wonder also if the activity profile you use affects things... Are you using a Road or MTB profile?

Either way, I agree that the 830 shouldn't be showing these as turns at an intersections, but I can also understand why it does so.

I just typed a big response including links to OSM's site but this forum's anti-spam measure ate it! :-(

Basically, both these co-ordinates do have "intersections' - the first to a driveway which on OSM is defined as a service road.

The second has a trail intersecting on that corner. You'll need to search for yourself.

I agree that the navigation is wrong if it's showing a turn, but I can also understand why it is. I think Garmin have misinterpreted the OSM data.

I wonder if the navigation behaves differently depending on whether you're using a road or MTB activity profile... Certainly for the second one, the OSM data when using a MTB profile would suggest going straight on if travelling to the southwest to be a valid option...

Dpawlyk, yes every hairpin triggered a navigation prompt but I don’t really get why. On OSM it looks like there’s nothing on the corner but a marker for the hairpin. When you’re watching your heart rate, power and cadence (and remaining ascent) it’s quite interrupting for the screen to change. Maybe I could have disabled prompts or something.

Was it a navigation prompt to turn or a prompt that you've reached a course point i.e. the hairpin countdown? I think these prompts can be turned off

Check that you don't have the sharp bend warning feature enabled.

Quite a few of the hairpins on the Stelvio do have paths/tracks connecting to them on OSM. They would likely trigger navigation prompts. There are some paths/tracks connecting to the road between the hairpins as well which would likely trigger navigation prompts as well.
