Owners--would you buy an 830 again?

Just before BCBS cut the Edge units from their discount program, I managed to snag one for 35% off.

The deal seemed too good to pass up, and although I own a dead reliable Fenix 1 and Cyclo 505, those units are pretty old and I justified upgrading due to the discount price on an 830.

I worked all weekend, so my unit is sitting on my stairs in a box, unopened.  Now that I have some free time, I've been perusing forums and Reddit, and have noticed a pretty significant amount of seeming dissatisfaction with the 830.  Seem to be a lot of complaints / issues / bugs.

Now, part of this may be the internet syndrome where things look worse than reality because the vocally unhappy people can be over represented on forums.  On the other hand, maybe the units really are unacceptably buggy.

So, I have the option of opening my package and dealing with any issues that come along, or returning the 830 to Garmin and either sticking with my outdated but reliable gear.

What say you, 830 folks?  Are things that bad in 830 Land, or at this point in time are the bugs getting ironed out and most owners happy that they bought the thing?

In other words, knowing what you know now, would you purchase again, or go in another direction?

Thanks.

  • That is true that Garmin's user documentation is deplorable.  When I first got mine I had more questions than I ever expected, and I am fairly tech-savvy and have owned Garmin hand-helds in the past.  But it was a frustrating experience for sure.  Luckily this forum was pretty helpful, but nothing was more frustrating than trying to figure out what the hell the 830 was doing in the middle of a ride.

Yes, jump, grit and flow do not need a route.  Climbpro does require navigating a route in order to know where the upcoming climbs are.

  • Definitely. Upgraded from Edge 800 so I could use Varia rear radar, and it is an incredible setup.

  • of course I will, it's the best Bike GPS on the market

  • No, I wouldn't buy GARMIN EDGE 830 another time. I don't recommend this device. This device has got many mistakes in the characteristics that GARMIN say that have. I m really sad with this bought. Mine have got 3 months and Garmin don't want bring back my money to me.

  • Yes. I would definitely purchase it again. I love it in combination with my RTL 511 radar back light and my UT 800 front light. Espescially, with FW 7.x it became much better. In addition, it works flawlessly with messages coming from my iPhone 12 Pro.

  • this is interesting!? you can read your incoming message on your screen ? this is a subject on an other post that is not resolved yet forums.garmin.com/.../no-text-mesages
  • Yes. Works without any problem. See attached screenshots of incoming messages for a telephone call and Pushover on my iPhone 12 Pro with iOS 14.4.1.

If it does not work, you should probably try to restart the Edge.

  • The post is over one year old, I suppose everyone have already restart a few times, I am going to write about your reply on the concern post
Anyway this will restart the discussion, thx

I use your pictures, I hope this is not a problem for you

  • No I wouldn't buy it again.

On the plus side the battery life is great.

    Negatives:

    • Sony GPS chip is not as good as the chip set in the 810
    • Navigation algorithms are from the 20th century - no improvement in many generations of GPS bike computers that are advertised as helping you navigate
    • Trailforks integration is not that useful.
    • Maps are not updated very often
    • Climbpro is not that useful - start and end of climbs doesn't always make sense
    • MTB Grit & Flow are not that useful.
    • I don't believe the jump distances
    • No way to turn off the Virtual Partner

Honestly, I wish Garmin would focus on getting the basics - GPS, navigation/routing, maps, communication with sensors - working robustly instead of adding bling features that are not that useful or could be added with a ConnectIQ app for those that want more bling.
