Grade field displays wildly inaccurate values; cumulative and enroute total ascent figures incorrect

With version 4.1 my 830 unit will consistently under- or overestimate gradients, often wildly so (displaying 19% during the climb of a 5% grade, or -7% while on reasonably level ground). At points during a ride the display's total ascent figure will seemingly 'freeze' only to instantaneously increase 600' or so after a few minutes. My end of ride cumulative ascent figures are 30+% more generous than they should be. Performed a reset to no avail. Have reverted unit to firmware version 3.5. Will see what happens...

  • Former Member - I am sorry that you are experiencing a Grade issue with your Edge 830. Can you share the activity file from this ride?

  • The grade field has always been very inaccurate for me. Not as wild as your example, but +/- 2 or 3 percent happens all the time. And the lag... THE LAG! My wahoo bolt manages to show accurate grades with  .1% resolution. Why can't garmin?

Am receiving 'An error occurred. Please try again or contact your administrator' message when attempting to upload GPX file.

  • Mattew - i have had similar issues.  Numerous climbs on my ride today were incorrectly reflected in real time as 0% or -1%.  I also lost out on about 2000 ft of ascent as a result. I can send you the strava link to the ride or GPX file. I'd appreciate it if this issue could be addressed.

  • I encounter same problems with elevation  and grade.

  • Same for me and I wrote about it several times.

I am experiencing the same inaccuracy with grade using an 820, most annoying is when unit displays 0% while climbing what I historically know to be ~5%.  Interesting one of my friends riding next to me has a very old Edge 500 but he does not have the same issues, grade appears to be more accurate.

Is this a know issue with 820 and 830 units?

Lots of pressure coming from the bunch to change to the Wahoo Elemnt Bolt so any assistance to improve accuracy would be greatly appreciated.

  • Definitely a known issue on the 820.  There a number of IQ gradient data field apps that calculate gradient directly from baro sensor data.  These work very well for me.  One is "Sensible Grade"

Will comment that I am having same issue. Mostly, it is that the maximum %grade is getting "averaged out". If going up a hill with grade transients. The 830 unit will show the 8, 12, 14% or whatever, will show the transient maximum %grade. Also, I KNOW approximately what the %grade is. BUT when it is uploaded will show a ~5.2% or whatever for the maximum %grade travelled.

I also experience a lag. It's very frustrating. I suspect my power is adversely affected as a result. Can anything be done to eliminate or greatly reduce the lag?
