830 locked up during a ride

During a ride today, my Edge 830 completely locked up.  The screen and buttons were all unresponsive.  Eventually I figured out how to reset by holding down the power button for about 20-30 seconds.  It did resume recording the activity where it left off.  But I had been riding for about four or five minutes before I realized.

My Edge is on software v4.10.

Below is a video of the incident.

What can I do to prevent this from happening?  It's quite frustrating.

  • Same thing happened to me yesterday.  A full 20+ sec power button hold was necessary, did not resume when it came back.  Was stuck on one of my data screens, and was navigating when the incident occurred.

I’m also experiencing the same locks. On every ride. The touch screen locks, but the device keeps recording.

Sometimes, after 20-30 mins the touch screen recovers normal functionality, but sometimes the device goes worst and it losts bluetooth connections and I have to reboot.

Always riding without navigation, but with bluetooth connections to an iPhone and to a bluetooth pulse band.

Most of them in a group ride.

  • I had another full lock-up yesterday requiring a hard reboot during a ride.  Is there any update on addressing this issue?  Do I need to do a full reset back to factory settings?

  • Was the unit executing a segment?

Still no solution?  It happens every time, so the unit is pretty much unusable.

  • Try disable the segments for one ride and see if that stops the crashes.

    How do you do that?

  • No.  Just riding along, not navigating.  Speed and HR sensors were active.  I was on the map view at the time, with HR and distance data fields.  Strangely the HR and distance kept updating, but the map was frozen.  I swiped to another screen, and then it was completely locked.  From there I did the hard reset.

  • Under the activity profile is a toggle button for segments

Today is 2/22/2020 and I had the same thing happen on my very first gravel ride - I just got the 830 unit yesterday!!!

Locked up at 19 miles in. Come on Garmin fix this problem already!!

update - after following the reset suggestion of holding the power putt on for 30 seconds, my ride was saved up the the 19 mile lockup and I got a software version update notification from 4.10 to 5.10. Perhaps this is the fix??
