GPS Chipset 2.50 - no improvements compared to 2.42 beta?

Just did my first ride after updating to 2.50 (and doing a full reset, just to be sure).

The GPS accuracy data field still only shows 3m all the time. I biked today using the Edge 830 and my old Suunto Ambit 2 at the same time. The Edges GPS track still deviates more  from the actual track than the Ambit 2 does. Some longer segments on Strava don't appear in the Edges recording while they do on the Ambits because of the deviations. Corners are still cut short or averaged out in the woods. At some places the Edges track is a couple of meters in parallel to the actual track and runs through buildings etc. There are only rare occasions where the Edge beats the Ambit in terms of accuracy.

So is the 2.50 version just the official release of the 2.42 beta with no further enhancements? And can this be fixed by software updates at all?

  • Hi Jaran, I  have same experience with the edge 830 like you (comparing it to the older generations like the Edge 1000). Today I created a support ticket e.g. requesting whether a software fix is possible at all. However, looking at all the silence on the topic from official side I am in doubt that there will be a fix very soon - I will return my unit if there is no positive outlook within the next days.

  • I had contacted the German support team of Garmin by providing several links to the forum posts here about the GPS accuracy and stating that I had the same problems (of course, some of those posts coming from me....)

They answered they were not aware of any issues and that I should do a full reset and if that doesn't help that I should send in the device for replacement. They even provided me an RMA number already.

But of what use would that be? This appears to be a systematic problem and not "just a batch" of bad devices.

  • There are more revisions from each model, they (Garmin) are continously redesign the mainboard , different PCB allocation, different ICs, etc. A wrongly designed PCB could cause interference near the GPS antenna inside the case and it could cause bad GPS track . So probably the 1st batch of 830s are all wrong, and only a next redesigned batch will be better...

  • I expect similar response, but I will report back. So far it seems not clear wether its defective hardware, missing software optimization or just the maximum accuracy we will get from the new gps sensor. Therefore I also think that currently a replacement will likely not solve the problem.

  • A good point and a point of hope. But instead of hoping I'd prefer knowing. I will probably try a replacement then next.

An official statement however would be not only welcome but be the honourable way to go. After all those posts in the official forum here and on a lot of other forums this cannot be an unknown issue.

you did the gps soaking after installing the GPS update ?

    happy & safe sporting

  • Mmmmh - strange. To me it looks to be a significant improvement. Had the same experience as you before. But for my todays ride the track match fairly accurate to the map, even in the woods. This was definitely different for my earlier rides with 2.42.

I have GPS-Galileo activated and 1s recording. Not for better accuracy just for logging segments more accurate and stress the battery a bit more.

yep, same as , positive reports come from use of GALILEO GPS

    Change Log

    - Improves GNSS performance for open water swim activities.
    - Improves GPS + GALILEO navigation performance.
    - Improves GNSS performance for cycling activities.
    - Other bug fixes and improvements.

    happy & safe sporting

  • It is time to switch back to Galileo and give it a try again. I will do it with my next ride. But I wouldn't count on what you highlighted in changelog. It was present in 2.42b changelog too. Improvements for cycling activities is a new one.
