GPS Chipset 2.50 - no improvements compared to 2.42 beta?

Just did my first ride after updating to 2.50 (and doing a full reset, just to be sure).

The GPS accuracy data field still only shows 3m all the time. I biked today using the Edge 830 and my old Suunto Ambit 2 at the same time. The Edges GPS track still deviates more  from the actual track than the Ambit 2 does. Some longer segments on Strava don't appear in the Edges recording while they do on the Ambits because of the deviations. Corners are still cut short or averaged out in the woods. At some places the Edges track is a couple of meters in parallel to the actual track and runs through buildings etc. There are only rare occasions where the Edge beats the Ambit in terms of accuracy.

So is the 2.50 version just the official release of the 2.42 beta with no further enhancements? And can this be fixed by software updates at all?

  • Yep - after firmware upgrade it could make more sense.
I did it not, just because not keeping in mind. ;-)
And still the results were good

  • btw - I read in another thread Garmin Express synching this data by default. But only Garmin Express, not the Connect app.

  • HI Jaran

Could you post the FIT activity file.

It sounds like the EPO data may have been out of date.

Net ritje gereden met nieuwe firmware 2.50. Een enorm verschil met vorige b versie. Volledige 40km in bos gereden en was zeer nauwkeurig. Was zeker niet het geval met de 2.42b versie. Was echt onder de indruk

  • it is not true, it syncs through GE, GC (BT conn.) and Wi-Fi  also.

  • I've been using Garmin's since the 500 came out, have never heard the term "GPS Soak" or anything else similar before - I know they say to leave the device in a clear sky to establish connection, but it's never been explained (that I've seen) of why. I've always just assumed it was to get an initial lock.

What's the downside to not "soaking" the GPS prior to starting an activity?

Is it just the the GPS and other metrics may be unreliable at the beginning of the activity, but the GPS "catches up" after a while? Or does the soaking only happen between starting an activity and actually moving off?

  • Hi aweatherall,

I will try suggested "soaking" over the weekend and also GPS+Galileo (used GPS+GLONASS before). But i'm skeptical about the "soaking" which I do know from my original yellow Garmin eTrex but should not be necessary with devices that can fetch current ephemeris data pre-ride via wifi. I always switch on the Edge some minutes before the ride while connected to Wifi.

Concerning FIT files: I'll message you over the weekend with whatever I find during above mentioned tests.

  • I did yesterday a bike ride with the 2.50 (GPS + GLONASS). It looks, that accuracy is much better than before - see black line vs red lines.

  • Hi Jaran, pls check the date of the EPO.BIN on your Edge via file manager, sometimes this file not updating due to corruption or similar and stucking on an old (or corrupted) EPO.BIN version. If it has old date , delete it manually from filemanager, unmount your unit, sync again (via BT, wifi, usb to GE) and should get the latest EPO.BIN. If it's good, and You still have bad gps tracks, then there is a bigger issue... :/
