Live Track always fails

So I went for the 830 instead of a Roam, so now the regrets start.

I have tried to make live track start about six times while I have owned the 830, it only worked once. I don’t know why.. I now you need to be standing on one leg while there is a blue moon for it to work, but really!

i have Garmin connect mobile open. The 830 reports its connected to the phone, and I have auto Live Track enabled. So then I set off on my ride ten minutes later the 830 reports Live Track Failed. what’s going on here?

Can anyone else get it to work? Why does it take so long to fail and is there a way to make it try again mid ride?

Thanks for your help

  • Ok I think I am getting to the point where it can work. This is my current experience to make it work for those interested.

    1. When I switch on my 830. It only ever connects one of the two bluetooth connection (why it needs two is a mystery to me). So I click on it to manual connect.
    2. Next I close Garmin Connect Mobile [GCM] and the restart it.
    3. Then go to the live track page in the app.
    4. Then start my ride.

At step 2, on ISO; I find that GCM gives me the running man continuously when I try to go to the live track page. Closing and the opening the app solves this issue.

I am still connected to my Wifi my experience is different to bglover in the post above.

You shouldn't have to do any of the nonsense as Autostart LiveTrack should just work.

Be good to hear if this works for for anyone else

  • Following on - yet another look at Bluetooth. The additional bluetooth connection is for Smart unlock (in my case Android) I had paired this before but this time I followed through with the configuration and added the 830 as a trusted device and set smart unlock to work when the phone is on me and in range of the 830. A couple of on-off tests in the house seemed to work OK. Also a couple of about 4km test rides and it all behaved. I don't recall said smart unlock feature with the Garmin 510.

A longer ride of a few hours on the weekend will confirm. So thinking ahead this might indicate smart unlock needs to be configured for livetrack to work?

  • I've had a couple of goes at answering my own question and each time I thought I had the solution, but in the end Live Track fails. Sorry if it looks like I keep bumping my own post, but this is my latest experience.

This time I paid attention to the mobile app on my phone. This time and all failure since I have been monitoring the app, I can see that there is no internet connection. Why the app thinks there isn't a connection is a mystery to me. I now believe that if the mobile app keeps it's internet connection then Live Track will work

  • For me the same, sometimes does not start. Sometimes the live track starts without an activity.
    Sometimes he does not quit.
It is unbelievable, this is a basic function that has already worked for older generations of edge.
