Live Track always fails

So I went for the 830 instead of a Roam, so now the regrets start.

I have tried to make live track start about six times while I have owned the 830, it only worked once. I don’t know why.. I now you need to be standing on one leg while there is a blue moon for it to work, but really!

i have Garmin connect mobile open. The 830 reports its connected to the phone, and I have auto Live Track enabled. So then I set off on my ride ten minutes later the 830 reports Live Track Failed. what’s going on here?

Can anyone else get it to work? Why does it take so long to fail and is there a way to make it try again mid ride?

Thanks for your help

  • Should have said I’m on 4.10 firmware

That's just the way it is. Same here today. Sometime it works, most of the time it doesn't Slight smile

And every fimware update ever "resolves" it.

  • So this happened a lot to me when I first got setup. I read in a similar thread that someone recommended uninstalling the app, reinstalling, and reconfiguring it from scratch. There were a number of replies from folks saying it worked for them.

I can confirm, at least for me, it has been working flawlessly since I did this. Give it a try...

  • my live track works perfect............if only the "popular routes" featured actually worked without taking me in wrong direction and on busy crazy whys'.

Sorry - i'm not helping you in any way. I'm on 4.1 so thought i would mention it's an across the board problem.

  • So here's what I did:

    1. went to Garmin Connect mobile and deleted the 830
    2. then I deleted the app from my phone
    3. then I deleted the two Bluetooth connections (why are there two?)
    4. then I removed the Bluetooth connection details from the 830
    5. then I reinstalled Garmin Connect mobile on my phone
    6. then I used the app to add the device (830)
    7. followed all of the prompts for pairing,
    8. I then set LiveTrack to Auto Start without having the app open.
    9. Next I saw one of the two BT connecting was not connected, so I manually made the connection
    10. Then I completed the other steps.
    11. Next I started an activity and ...

HEY PRESTO.it's working again and I am happy again.

Hope someone finds these steps useful. I think this points to the fact that one of the BT connections to the phone wasn't playing ball, so possibly I just needed to perform step 9.

  • I spoke too soon. Went for I ride shortly after this post, and live track failed. All the BT connections were connected. I've given up. May be I chuck it and go with A Wahoo Roam after all

  • Mine is hit-or-miss too.  This past weekend I did a 100-mile mountain bike race.  With my wife as my support crew, I wanted/needed her to be able to see my location throughout the event.  During my warm-up, Live Track worked, starting automatically.  "Great!" I thought "Shouldn't be any problem for the race."  I finished my warm-up ride, stopped the session and lined up in the starting corral.

The gun went off, I hit the start button, and my 830 then displayed the message "Live Track failed."  WTF.  Obviously I didn't stop to mess with it, but was both befuddled and extremely frustrated.

  • On 4.1 - Livetrack is hit-n-miss actually more miss.

Experience much like well coordinated - factory reset, uninstalled re-installed the connect app on the phone, you think it works and then it doesn't.  In contrast the prevous Garmin 510 with same phone and livetrack works. I think a 830 firmware issue. Garmin please fix

  • I too have struggled with Live Track over the last couple of years but I seem to have figured out how to make my experience better. Live track works just about 100% of the time if I don't start an activity while my phone is still connected to my home wifi then pedal away and let it disconnect. If I disconnect the wifi PRIOR TO starting an activity (the data connection is constant and from the same source - cellular) then it works great. Seems any little discontinuity in connection derails it completely
