830 will not turn on

I had a strange problem today.  I charged the unit using a charger (not the computer) and the 830 powered off as expected when full charge was reached.  However, when I went to do a ride, I could not turn it on.  Tried the power button many times, also held it >10 seconds to try for a reset.  Nothing worked.  I then used the USB cable to plug it into the computer.  that powered it up and after that, could power up and down with the power button.  I looked for an error log file after my ride, but could not find one.  Any ideas?  I will have to do some testing to see if this repeats.  Note I am running the beta firmware.

  • Just had this happen to me too! Can't do anything with it. Bummed. 

  • Just worked with Garmin support. They had me plug in the Edge to a computer and hold the power button down for 30 seconds. It worked! I did notice that if you kept it plugged in, it would shut off, so I unplugged it and it works now. PHEW

    happened to me on 5.0, unit would not turn on, plugging USB charger would not turn on the unit neither, had to hold power bottom for around 15s

    Mine just did this. I'm not wasting time with it. Sending it back to Amazon and buy another one. I'll keep doing this until Garmin release a working product.

    Grrr.... It just happened to me!   So glad for this thread.    Pushed power for about 30 seconds and it started up.

    I just bought the 830 because the 820 had sooooo many problems.  (e.g., when it got wet, the screen kept flipping around).   The problems with the 830 were also bugs known by Garmin.   And the never fixed them.

    Garmin quality control should be fired.

    I actually think they did that, looooong ago, and "forgot" to replace them. Or maybe they didn't have a proper quality assurance team from the very beginning 8-)

    Sorry - couldn't resist (after having experienced myself several problems with a couple of Garmin devices that could never have escaped dedicated quality assurance engineers; we are all beta-testers, it seems, and not even all reported bugs/problems get fixed).

    Same problem here on 2 different 830's. Doesn't happen every time it's charged. Also found after charging, the unit has a blank screen and looks like it is off but is actually on, then runs the battery flat and obviously won't switch on when needed. When I am heading out, the last thing I want to do is switch a computer on to reboot the Garmin. Shouldn't have to do it that's what the on button is for.

    Hello all,


    I have this device since June and my patient is running out.

    Either the device can't be turned on, it takes me about 10-15 mins to turn it on after a hard reboot.

    Or the device can't be turned off, the off button sign is visible on the screen and does not go away ... again a hard reboot is needed.

    Or during the ride does my screen block ... you can hear me already  ... hard reboot is needed.  And some of the times, I lost a part of my ride.

    And the fun part of this all is that the hard reboot does not work immediatly.  I know that I have to press the 2 buttons for more than 10 seconds ... and no ... that does not work all the time.

    And the funny part is that they say that a hard reboot is the solution?

    No, that is not.  It is a "workaround"!!!!

    So I've opened a ticket and I'm very curious what kind of "solution" they will provide.
