830 will not turn on

I had a strange problem today.  I charged the unit using a charger (not the computer) and the 830 powered off as expected when full charge was reached.  However, when I went to do a ride, I could not turn it on.  Tried the power button many times, also held it >10 seconds to try for a reset.  Nothing worked.  I then used the USB cable to plug it into the computer.  that powered it up and after that, could power up and down with the power button.  I looked for an error log file after my ride, but could not find one.  Any ideas?  I will have to do some testing to see if this repeats.  Note I am running the beta firmware.

  • This is still an issue 26/02/2022, Garmin edge 830 will only switch on when plugged in to charge. Takes an age then to locate the satellite (15 minutes today) and the start time is days out, an gives an elapsed time of 50 hours for my ride, when I was only out for 3 hours! Software version on E830 is 9.10 which is the latest one. Why is this still an issue, 3 years on from the initial post Garmin?

  • I having the same problem with my 8week old, used for the first time 830, I’ve followed your advice and after several attempts at long pressing when plugged in to laptop it’s finally come back on it was 70% charged when it shut down. Thanks for your post

  • Reviving this old thread because I just had this problem.  Tried the long power button hold-down 5x, different charging methods etc. then called Garmin and they said it's a common problem, and the tech recommended exactly this process.  Had given up (and they even issued me a return authorization) but on 6th attempt it worked!

  • I’ve had a similar issue. I charged the unit off my laptop (the first time I’d connected it), used it okay for a couple of days. Then a few days later went to charge up via a usb power socket (where I normally charge it), then went to use it and it was dead. Tried a long hold on the power button and nothing. I took it into work and tried charging it off my laptop again. It came on after 30 seconds or so and showed zero charge. It’s charged up now and appears fine again. It’s acting like it dumped all its charge instead of charging, I’ve tried different devices on the same usb charger and they are charging fine.

  • I've had the same problem, and it is occurring more and more often.  I can't get it to start at all now.  Garmin should do a recall and fix all defective units.

  • Same, thought battery was dead but would not power up even with USB plugged in. Held power button for 20 sec it turned on: "57% charged."
