830 will not turn on

I had a strange problem today.  I charged the unit using a charger (not the computer) and the 830 powered off as expected when full charge was reached.  However, when I went to do a ride, I could not turn it on.  Tried the power button many times, also held it >10 seconds to try for a reset.  Nothing worked.  I then used the USB cable to plug it into the computer.  that powered it up and after that, could power up and down with the power button.  I looked for an error log file after my ride, but could not find one.  Any ideas?  I will have to do some testing to see if this repeats.  Note I am running the beta firmware.

A comment followed by a question:

    1) I've owned to 830's. Both sold and fulfilled by Amazon back in the fall. The first one I experienced the exact issue described in this thread, and exchanged it for the second 830 which did not have the issue. Both ran the same firmware. This led me to believe that there's a hardware, not a software problem.

    2) The Beta page says, "Added diagnostics to help track down an issue where the device can lock up." That implies only the ability to gather data, not an actual fix. So, is there an actual fix?

  • You should read the thread.  Garmin claims (just below) that this issue is fixed in the 5.44 beta (though that may or may not be true).  Note there is a 5.48 beta available now, too.

  • I had the same issue today. Charged overnight for my ride and poof. Nothing. Not a tone, nothing on the screen. Used Strava app for my ride. After finding this post, followed the suggestions and had success. I had to hold the power button down for a long time finally before it powered back on. The first time I tried, I released the power button after hearing a tone, but nothing happened. Then I just held it down, through several tones, until the word GARMIN appeared on the screen. Then it finally powered on.

I've had the same problem twice since owning the Edge 830. Only had it less than a month. Always happens after leaving it on charge with the USB cable plugged into a power source (no computer attached). The only way to revive it is holding the power button for a long time till it reboots. Can someone at Garmin please leave their 830 plugged in overnight and check that this is actually a really bad software bug that needs fixing. Disappointed.

  • What FW version are you running?  Make sure you have version 5.50 loaded and see if you can reproduce the same issue.  I have not seen this problem on any FW since installing 5.44 and above.

  • Garmin Express shows version 5.10 and that I am up to date. How do I update to version 5.50?

  • The sticky thread at the top of this forum announcing the release of 5.50 contains a link to download the latest version for manual install.  Download the zip file. Expand the zip file and look for the GUPDATE.GCD inside.  Copy that to the Garmin folder on the edge the restart the device.  It will prompt you to update.  Once it is finished you will have 5.50 installed and hopefully no more power problems.

  • Updated without a hitch. Hopefully no more power issues. Fingers crossed
