830 will not turn on

I had a strange problem today.  I charged the unit using a charger (not the computer) and the 830 powered off as expected when full charge was reached.  However, when I went to do a ride, I could not turn it on.  Tried the power button many times, also held it >10 seconds to try for a reset.  Nothing worked.  I then used the USB cable to plug it into the computer.  that powered it up and after that, could power up and down with the power button.  I looked for an error log file after my ride, but could not find one.  Any ideas?  I will have to do some testing to see if this repeats.  Note I am running the beta firmware.

I never use navigation. I use it for training only (very basic usage).  It's only happened maybe 4-5 times in the last 3 months. I just assumed that it was downloading updates for itself or my vector 3's that I have on one of my bikes. For the last month, I've been leaving it on the charger cord and so far it has not surprised me with a low battery. And yes, way better than the 820 especially the battery life.

  • I have an 830 5.1 and gps 2.8.
Last Friday i had charged to 100% and notice the device wifi wasn't enabled, so i decided to enable it and made a power off. Today early in the morning had 0% battery. Disabled the device wifi, charged and power off. checked end of day and still has 99%.

Seems that even with the device powered off, somehow the wifi drains the battery....

  • Same problem with device that is one moth old. After charging does not reboot. Connecting to computer did not solve the issue. Pressing on/off for a long time did power on the device.

  • This is happening more and more now!

It does seem inconsistent, can't really nail down anything in particular that causes it

Hold down all 3 buttons, it comes back in about 10sec, every time

Great.  Same exact issue here, and I was just about to go for a ride with my fully charged 830.

Unit was fully charged last night before powering it on/off to make sure it was fully off.  At that point, I noticed a faint, grayed out power symbol remained on the display.

Fast forward to this afternoon.  I walk the 830 downstairs to put it back on the K-Edge.  The faint, gray symbol is still displayed.  I held the power button down for a couple seconds and the symbol slowly disappeared.

Now, I try to turn the unit on and nothing.  Held the left side power button for almost a minute and still nothing.

It’s now at 13% back on the USB charger.

The time it was fully charged last night until I tried to turn it on today was about 14 hours.  How can the device drain this fast?  There’s some weird bug in the system that’s for sure.

Guess I won’t be able to track this ride if I still go on one.  I’m going birdwatching instead.  Thanks, Garmin.

I have been hesitant to download the current 5.10 firmware because the version I had prior to updating it with 5.0.0.0 was more reliable.  I’ve noticed a couple other annoying bugs on this 5.0.0.0, the battery drain being the most serious.

    Device: Garmin 830

    Firmware: 5.0.0.0

  • Keep the device wifi off. that is what seems to be consuming power while the device is switched off

I agree, the bug is likely a WiFi/charging related issue.

I will turn the 830 WiFi off while charging from now on, after today’s charge, since I’m monitoring it.  And I’m still not updating that firmware.  More issues could arise.

I have noticed the device doesn’t over drain in normal use.  It can go sitting idle on my bike for a few days and have the same battery percentage when I turn it back on.

Either way, when that faint, grayed out power button appears, something is whacky.

  • i never had the device wifi on and always had a good battery level. The day i decided to switch wifi on, on the device, the day after, it was down to 0%. reverted the wifi and since then the device retains the battery as normal. I'm in 5.10 f. version
