When will Garmin adjust the algorithm to identify corrupt HR data .

I realise you can't fix corrupt data.  It's calculated in device after each activity.  But given how much heart rate monitors (all brands) experience issues, it is amazing to me that Garmin will not first identify the issue and ask if you want it discarded/corrected and at the very minimum allow it to be corrected after and have stats recalculate.

If you are riding along at 220bpm at 140watts and your FTP is 260 with a lactate HR threshold of 162bpm, surely Garmin can identify something is up here.  They have everyone's data.  They would know that this is not normal and something is up.  Then when you stop the ride you either discard it and get no benefit (annoying if you did a decent vo2max session) or get corrupted data for weeks.  The other issue is Garmin will adjust your heart rate zones to the "new max".  So any ride after is seen as low aerobic, even if you are in high aerobic zones.you have to actually go in and reset the zones.  This probably catches out heaps of users.

I'm at the point after 5 years that the Garmin metrics are becoming more of a hassle than they are worth.

Time to innovate guys.

  • Set your max HR manually and turn off "automatic adjusting of max HR".  That doesn't fix everything, but it will save some aggravation.  Even with turning off max HR adjustment, you'll still see the max HR recorded and can decide if you want to adjust to the new number.

  • Where would I turn off automatic adjustment?  I can't find it in connect.

  • Ha, being in GC would make too much sense!  Lol !  I believe it's in the 530 menu itself.  Drill down to the HR sensor itself, I think it's in those options.  Let us know if you can't find it, it's in there somewhere.

  • Menu>My Stats>Training Zones>Heart Rate Zones

  • Ah, thanks for correcting me PeterK.  It's one of those things you generally don't access frequently, I forgot where it was.

  • If you think turning off the "Automatic Adjustment" will stop HR values being changed, it will not, it can still happen on odd occasions. This topic has been mentioned in the forums before.

It is one of the annoying features of a 530 when it happens. Usually it can happen after an update, but I doubt the 530 will ever get updated again. But, it can just happen out of the blue.

It happened again to me 3 weeks ago, "Automatic Adjustments" turned off, I set off downhill with no effort, a very short turn on the flat and after about 100 yards up a gentle hill, I was in Zone 4 despite only having a low HR of around 130 if I remember right. When I stopped to check, as I recognize the issue well when it happens, my 175 max HR had been changed to 154 max in the settings and "Automatic Adjustment" was still turned off.

The only thing you can do is keep an eye on it
