New Map update EU 2024.10 Issue.

I recently updated my "530" with the new map, EU 2024.10, which went well with no issues, just over 20 minutes instead of the forecast 3 hours.

But now I am left with a start up problem, its taking up to  2 minutes for the 530 to start, which is not a problem if I am not in a rush to get going, but it is a big problem if I need to be away quick and others are waiting

On turning it on, the startup "Garmin" screen appears, then the screen blacks out, followed a short while later by it reappearing

Start up then commences as normal and informs you its loading maps etc

Then it comes to the next screen informing you to that everything is loaded and "Press any button to continue", but the 530 just hangs on that page for nearly a minute which is far longer than it has been in the past, it would only be a few seconds.

If you attempt to press any button to progress, nothing happens. But when it finally does start, if you have pressed a multitude of buttons to try and make it work, you find that you can have changed menu's and settings etc because despite the screen being locked up, the buttons and functions are still working in the background.

Sometimes when it starts, it also justs hangs showing a small screen in the centre of the display.

If I disable the EU West map that I am using, the 530 starts up as normal even when I have an OSM map enabled.

Over 3GB of free space is still available on the 530

  • Discovered this morning, the issue seems to be an interaction with an activity profile and why probably no one else may be seeing the problem.

Yesterday I used my "Walking/Running" activity profile and this morning, the 530 started up in seconds whilst still in that profile. On checking, somehow, every map on the 530 is enabled including the new map update in my "Walking/Running" profile.

When I switched to my "Road Cycling" profile, the 530 hung and nothing happened for a while. On enabling every map on the 530 and trying the "Road" profile, it still hung.

On trying every other profile on the 530, they all started up in seconds, so basically, there is something in my "Road Cycling" profile that is causing the problem and associated with the new map update as it does not happen if the new map update is disabled and just using a 3rd party app. Interestingly, if I open up every profile in turn and then go back to "Road Cycling" it does not happen, only the first time it gets selected.

I presume it could be one of 2 apps from Garmin IQ, "SPH Graph" and "DIY", but, I have these 2 apps in use also in other profiles with slight alterations in data fields and these profiles start up OK in seconds , so that complicates the issue. Maybe one of them needs updating to comply with something new in the map update.

So basically now, I have copied my "Road Cycling" profile which also has the same issue as suspected it would and it will become a process of elimination using it to see what is causing the issue.

  • After a lot of button pressing, removing Connect IQ apps and profiles stripped down to the minimum etc I have ended up with the 530 still taking a long time to start up and with all activity profiles now slow to open up with or without the apps so that eliminates an interaction with them. Sometimes the long delay is when the screen is on " Press any button to continue" or when it's opening up the activity profile.

But, I have found it is only the new updated 2024 West map causing the problem, East and Central cause no issues and the 530 starts as fast as it always has.

I presumed it may be that the "West" map may be far larger than the "East and West" maps and takes longer to load but it is not the case, it is slightly smaller than all three. But is is interesting to see that their is probably more than 50% coverage of the "West" map given up to covering the Atlantic Ocean, basically just to cover a few tiny Islands, whereas on the other two maps, the same situation, only a tiny amount of sea surrounds small Islands. Basically the "West" map could be a lot smaller if a lot of the Atlantic Ocean was removed, unless Garmin thinks a lot of us in the West like to "ride" Pedaloo's out at sea

  • Finally solved the issue, found the time to reinstall all the maps, Reinstalling the 2024 maps cut the start up time down to just over a minute, a 50% improvement and reinstalling "Trailforks" which I never use, got the start up time down to 24 seconds so everything is working as normal now.

Having made a note of all details about the maps prior to updating and afterwards, everything was the same, file names etc and file size so nothing stands out as to what the problem was.

Possibly the "West" file was fragmented in the storage area and it took a while to find the fragmented pieces to open the map. Knew I should have reinstalled the map from the start and followed my intuition.
