Edge 530 stops recording after auto-pause and also randomly while riding.

I am now on my second Garmin 530 after returning the first one, but now I am finding exactly the same issue with the second one.  I already went through some steps of deleting a file and a folder and then restarting as requested by Garmin Tech support.  I did a short trial ride with 2 or 3 stops, and it paused and resumed just like it should with the auto-pause set at 2 mph.  I thought all was good, so I started out on a longer ride.  After about 15 miles I stopped for 30 seconds or so at an intersection, and when I started back out again the speed stayed at 0.0 and the distance stopped going up.  The only way I could get it to restart was to force a power down and then restart.  After doing that, it recorded speed and distance for about 5 miles, then went back to showing 0.0 for speed while I was still moving.  I did a power down once more, and this time it lasted for 1.1 miles and then went to 0.0, again while I was still moving.  My firmware is at the latest version as confirmed by Garmin tech support, and I am not using any speed sensors.  My wife has a Garmin 130 set up so that it also has auto-pause turned on, and it is working just fine.  I don't consider turning auto-pause off as a solution, and not sure if it would even help since it also stops recording while I am moving.  One other odd thing I noticed is that while it was stuck on 0.0 for speed, when I went to the map screen the view on the map was jumping around randomly and it said "ready to navigate" at the top of the screen instead of showing my current location.  So I am about ready to give up on Garmin and try some other brand at this point unless I can find a solution for this issue soon.  Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

  • If you haven’t already done so, try performing a soft reset by holding the power button for at least 10 seconds until it starts up again. Connecting to Garmin Express or GC Mobile should regularly be done to update to satellite EPO data and any other updates.

The EPO status can be checked under Settings>System>About>Copyright Info.

  • I don't consider turning auto-pause off as a solution, and not sure if it would even help

Perhaps not but it would provide another debugging data point and is very easy to do and instantly reversible. 2 mph is very low and without a seperate speed sensor is probably not within the 530s accuracy limit when only using GPS positioning to determine speed.

When I first saw mention of EPO here I had to look it up, it’s not the other EPO, “Extended Prediction Orbit (EPO) or Connected Predictive Ephemeris (CPE) files allow GPS devices to predict where satellites will be in the sky”, will also improve the GPS accuracy. Sounds like your position fix is not good which might explain both the speed data issue and what you see on the map.

IMO the single best, cheapest, easiest enhancement to a Garmin is a speed sensor.

while not impossible the fact you have had these issues with two devices would suggest the cause is more likely to be setup parameters or environmental, tall buildings or tree cover blocking signal & causing bad gos fix), rather than 2 dud devices.

Good luck with fixing the issue and safe riding.

  • Thanks for your reply Peter.  Part of what Garmin support had me try was a reset, and that did not help.  I also checked the EPO, and it says current.  Also says no other updates available.

  • Thanks for your reply.  I may give it a try with auto-pause off as you suggested, I just didn't see that as a possible fix because even if it works, that is not how I want to use my Garmin.  My old Garmin 810 has no issues at all with auto-pause set at 2 mph.  But you are correct that having that info might be useful for eventually finding the root cause.

  • I just finished a ride and My Garmin kept Pausing/Resuming as I was climbing and I DO have a speed sensor connected and I’m nowhere near any trees or large buildings.  I’ve ridden the exact same 65 mile route twice before and it looks like the Garmin missed about 2 miles and 500 ft of climbing this time because of the constant Pause/Resume. Again, I do have a speed sensor and would be interested in any clues on how to fix this

  • Further details after latest ride.  Turned the auto-pause off completely, then went for a ride this evening with both my Garmin 530 and Garmin 810 on the bike.  At 5.01 miles, the Garmin 530 went to 0.0 speed and stopped recording distance.  Never started again the rest of the ride.  No issues with the Garmin 810.  The really odd thing though, is that the 530 still knew exactly where I was, because it went to live segments display both times at the start of one of my starred segments.  It was even kind enough to let me know that I was off my PR by 21 seconds.  So it was recording location during the segment, but my total distance did not go up at all.  And more oddness, it showed the entire 27 mile route in Strava with all segments, but still only showed distance as 5.01 miles.  Any further insights would be appreciated.

  • Highly odd, do you have Auto-Sleep enabled, if so I would disable it. Generally I turn off all auto type settings especially for debugging so I know that only changes I make will (should) have an impact. Only one “me-too” response so not a common problem? When the speed is showing zero / not recording distance what is happening on the map, is the position symbol moving and leaving a history trail, screenshots help as we might see something significant that you have not noticed.

ps, similar, especially to report from @slimeytoad , here? forums.garmin.com/.../1507013

  • I am having similar issues since the most recent update but with navigation prematurely showing a "Finish" icon after I've gone (or 530 thinks I've gone) off course and/or triggered auto restart. The only way to get the remaining route showing again on the map is to stop the current ride and reload the route. I have to do this 3 or 4 times a ride depending on how often I stop or take a wrong turning. It's very frustrating and breaks up the ride and the statistics

  • Now i have the same problem. Latest fw, speed and cadence updated. The 530 stops counting kms and speed. Full restart and it works again.
